Rebuilding Colossus
🕑 Added 2019-04-08 18:55:28 +0000 UTCMy Hifi rig is back together - almost - well, coming together at least... and much testing with the neighbor's tolerance for her awaits in the future. High fidelity requires a bit of volume when you have dynamic range.... something I find that many folks have not really experienced in music listening. To get the real, visceral feel of complex audio one must become immersed in it. Something any high fidelity aficionado will attest to. Oh, those speaker cables are massive - I know one person who follows my feed will have a field day with that! Would make no sense in a modern high power system I grant you, but with high efficiency low watt systems (my Model A is just 7W) running 4ohms on the output transformers to low loss crossovers and 4 ohm speakers at some distance, every fraction of an ohm you acquire in the chain changes impedance, particularly with very sudden changes in output and that adds up to noticeable performance loss under load. Getting 6W to sound as loud as 100W takes a lot of efficiency. But of course don't follow my lead on that, do what you like with your own system.

If you have the room may I suggest a pair of even more efficient speakers? I have huge folded horns that are around 101db 1watt 1meter. PS I'm glad you are getting settled in your new digs

yesindeedy.... I actually turned a 90's era replacement Atwater-Kent TRF radio tuner knob to customize it, added a notch for indication, etc.

Love the diversity of audio rigs from aficionados and they mostly sound wonderful. But I carefully avoid any deeper discussions (I do more listening and very little speaking). Audiophile discussions are on par with the ranks of religion and political discussions. I enjoy the aural experience and leave the rest to the experts.
Just make sure it doesn't start taking over the world
