The Gasoline Engine (1982)
🕑 Added 2021-11-15 20:12:14 +0000 UTCA film about back when Engines were Manly and Macho! This 16mm gem has a mouthy motor giving us his story, about how he continues to beat out the electrics and turbines, and how he works and gets improved. Great color and classic cutout style animation make this one from General Motors a classic 80's end-of-the-school-day film, even if much of it was made in the 70's. Enjoy!

The whole thing reads like ' this is how I justify my own existence'. I bet a lot of dinosaurs also said that. I've often wondered not just at how women have to compete with men, but also how thay have to live in a world where probably everything is conceived and designed by men, or overwhelmingly so. If a woman had come up with the original concept for the internal combustion engine and then developed its design, just how different would it be? What we have seems to be so full of muscles and thrusty things and brute force.

The first 30 seconds sounded like the engine was in a pickup - descending into a Texas drawl, but the fact-focused presentation dispelled that quickly. it was remarkably complete in what it covered. Clearly a Driver’s Ed film, but basic knowledge a driver should be exposed lest they be at the mercy of bamboozlers of various sorts. Again, I am enjoying your excellent taste in collecting. You really should keep a lookout, though, for “The President’s Analyst”. Prints turn up every so often and it *is* required reading to telecom come Internet geeks.

Sadly in these days of so called equality, I'm sure thatthe many women that now work in automotive engineering still face prejudice and probably have to be better than their male counterparts to get along. I for one, realize that being born a white male affords me a great privilege, thankfully the Computer Science/Engineering field, perhaps because it is a relatively new discipline, in my experience at least. My Ph.D partner and now my boss / colleague is a bi female, now married to a lovely German woman who works in banking. Oh nyyyy, look how off topic I have gone.
