As a kid, I had very little money and there were still one cent gumball machines. Those vanished decades ago. I found that Chicago and Northwestern diesel commuter trains would flatten any denomination for free, but not leave a cool imprint. I wish I could claim credit for it, but someone else put an all-metal Jewel shopping cart on the tracks and I can tell you the sound of exploding, shrieking metal was never louder! I'll bet the train had bent metal fragments on its front coupler all the way to Kenosha!

How does it work with the modern one I wonder! Pennies (1c) are long gone in NZ and Australia, even the 5c is gone in NZ

I had a fascination with these as a kid growing up on the East coast, and built a collection of them. Had the Franklin Mint (of course), the 1964 World's Fair, the Staten Island Ferry, the Atlantic City Boardwalk, and many more. Family and friends wanted to send me some from their travels, but I insisted that I had to turn the crank myself. About a decade ago I got one at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, and felt like a kid again! But I don't recognize the machine in the video! It looks like I'll have to get one of each at the Franklin Mint when I next travel East. Just found this site: http://www.pennycollector.com/ There are many Penny Crushers here in San Diego I didn't know about!

Smushed pennies are my go to collectible. For 51 cents I have a record of all the attractions I've visited. I have a sleeve that I printed to keep stacks of quarters and pennies at the ready.

That sure brings back some memories, Fran! First time i saw one of those machines was at the amusement park at Santa Cruz Beach in California. I think i was about 20 at the time (68 now). But i've been smooshing pennies since i was 8 - on railroad tracks! Never, ever had one come out with a NASA Space Capsule on it, though! Thank you for sharing that, Fran.

YES!! I love those things! There are not nearly enough of them within a reasonable distance of where I live. I really want to own my own penny-squishing machine, but they're exactly as expensive as you'd expect. Double points for space-related squished pennies!
