Dodge Drive (1961)
🕑 Added 2021-11-30 14:52:52 +0000 UTCThis unusual one-of-a-kind 16mm film is a reel of poorly spliced in-camera shots on reversal Ektachrome, with some high speed photography thrown in. Very likely depicting a proof of concept full scale model for demonstrating the "Dodge Drive" features to prospective customers in industry. This film has seen better days, but the color is still pretty good. Enjoy!

I've never seen a rubber that can last for decades. I don't know if they still make them, but I've taken apart test equipment where they used a 1/4" rubber shaft coupler between the panel knob shaft and the shaft of the destination potentiometer. After 10 years, they dry out and crack. Even if they're not even used. At 20 years, they simply disintegrate. Unless someone was really astute and kept these rubber joints flexible with some kind of oil, they would dry out and disintegrate. The rubber was so shiny that I'll bet the rubber was already treated with oil or something. Bad idea. Especially if used fully exposed on some shop floor where workers could look forward to the rubber breaking and a really nice chunk of axle and rubber flailing about.

I would think that all of that bending and flexing would generate a significant amount of heat.

Dodge Industrial is apparently live and well today and still makes the 'rubber tire' couplings.
