I had to completely give up on mice (and trackpads) by switching to the Logitech M570 thumb-ball (and its predecessors and successors). What I like best is that it doesn't move with use, and is always at the same place on my desk, allowing me to keep eyes on screen except when I need to access keyboard function keys.

Do not throw away! I have some also, and I want to try to re-use their chip sets and diodes with Arduino. I was thinking try to build a filament sensor for 3D printer. I have found some documentation on them. May be you can also enjoy by building something on it with Arduino or ESP32. https://www.hackteria.org/wiki/Hacked_Optical_Mouse
