It's how it was done before Perf-boards became a thing.

It may not be pretty but the important thing is it does what it is meant to. One thing I do is put a few 1N4001s in series of the input so the regulator does not have to work so hard. I did that in my 1980s 8 bit Sinclair so as not to stress the 7805. PSU said 9v it was banging out 12 volts under load. ZX Spectrum ran cooler as a result.

Awesome Fran! The company calls those generic PC boards "anyboards" and they used to be quite plentiful in surplus. Now they have equivalents for surface mount generic boards. I use the same, or very close to, the PC board you use. I love point-to-point wiring on those boards and you can plan in your head where you want the components. Wonderful to see I'm not the only one out there still using leaded parts on generic PC boards. I think you would be the only one at a "Tupperware Party" asking questions about conductance, melting temps and suitability for housing electronic projects. :-)

Your construction technique is very similar to mine. I learned electronics in a vacuum (not literally) so I was never too sure whether my technique was legit or complete garbage. If anyone calls me out on it I'll just point to this video and say, "If it's good enough for a senior member of the IEEE it's good enough for me!"

Wonderful. Thank you, Fran!
