Fran, it’s really the halogen bulbs the dollar stores were selling. The non-halogen incandescents were banned several years ago because their lumens /watt were too low.

I have been all LED here in the UK for a number of years. I actually like the light they give. My hybrid car is also all LED, energy saving I guess.

I guess I find the use of "watts" more troublesome than the huge number of other legacy units of measure because there is no exact link between watts and light output. The amount of light (lumens) versus watts varies widely depending on the technology. There is a direct relationship between most of them and rational units: 1 Horsepower = 745.7 Watts 1 Candlepower = 12.57 Lumens 1 Ton refrigeration = 12,000 BTU's per hour 100 Watts illumination = a plethora of numbers, depending on exactly what technology of light conversion is used. An incandescent bulb will produce 12 to 18 lumens per watt Halogen bulbs 10 to 20 Lumens per watt LED's 75 to 110 Lumens per watt Years ago it kind of made sense as everyone had a gut feel of how bright a 100 watt bulb was. With the change to CFL's and now LED's most people do not have that equivalency, so the term is borderline meaningless. Fran, thanks for letting me rant! I enjoyed the video as usual and look forward to you marking more milestones as the technology of our time fades away!

I, for one, welcome our cool LED Overlords. Once I found color temps that I liked, I switched right away. As my eyes have aged I have increased the lighting I live and work under. I’ve fantasized about those super modem every wall, ceiling and floor is a light panel - no shadows! Never really got on with CFLs. I've been all LED for some years, only one failure, a 100w equivalent started flickering.
