I think the screw in the battery door is a European standards thing (might have been British Standards before that) to stop children eating the batteries. It's been common in battery operated toys here (the UK) since at least the late 70s,
All kids toys come with that darn screw nowadays! As a parent of 3 I keep my mini screwdrivers close at all times!
