My dreams are of two types: of vastly complex computer systems (reflecting my interests) or of a time long ago - 70s or 80s - and I hardly ever see myself. I'm always roleplaying. I remember a dream about civilisations built underground in an Australian desert. I saw everything from a first-person view and it seemed like a scene out of Mad Max. I remember being very sad when I woke and realised that it was a dream.

My most notable dream was when I was at work, discussing some IT related item with a co-worker. Everything was perfect, cubicles, hallways, sounds and people. This was all in a first person view. Later, when I did go to work, I attempted to continue the discussion that began in my dream. He just looked at me oddly. When I realized, then explained what happened, everybody in the area looked at me oddly.

Very common to be upset or distraught upon waking from a powerful dream. One theory is that mammals evolved dreaming as a theater in which to hunt and survive being hunted, to hone skills for survival in the real world.

I nearly always remember my dreams when waking up, but half an hour later they have completely gone. Mind you I can also walk into a room with some important purpose in mind, but no idea what that purpose actually is.

Sometimes I think of it as defragmenting a computer hard drive - the way our brain organises and processes events and information when we sleep. It can be interesting to try to analyse our dreams, and maybe even learn something about ourselves that we're not totally conscious of. It's fascinating that your dreams are mostly set in the past, Fran. It also blows me away that you're able to talk about random topics like this, on the fly, with such finesse and depth.

Great to hear your dream thoughts. I share a lot of your explanations on this, however my dreams are very much rooted in the present. It's somewhat as if my brain is defragging with bits and bobs of things drifting through. As you suggest Fran, stuff that is going on under the surface. One downside for me is that I usually wake up feeling unsettled because my dreams make little sense to my consciousness and it takes a few minutes for reality to assert itself.
