I'm accessing only browser now. Deleted the app. I read about Apple's change but to me it sounded like it was for all those who subscribed through the app. Since I am one of those people, I'm not sure if the surcharge is still being added. Do I need to cancel and resubscribe on the web?

Heh, Tim Cook posted on how wonderful the National Parks are so you can post "#ShotOniPhone" and I told him he has as much claim on the National Parks as he has on Patreon creators. Told him to stop his extractive policy. Well .. I guess I told him...

For those who find viewing in a browser is too much problem And need an App. I understand you have to tap multiple things to get there in a browser. App is less screen fondling. What if I told you you can create your very own button to tap and take you straight to FranLab without an App. It works on Droids with Chrome but may be applicable to fruit fones. Find Patreon in your browser, find FranLab. Click on browser menu dots. Click 'Add to home screen'. You now have a direct to FranLab button to tap to your heart's desire.

I hadn't even thought of this affecting patreon until your video given the tax on revenue vs profits is already nuts. Elsewhere lots of developers are discussing how Apple's current position is that even people paying elsewhere should be included in the 30%, so long as they have the ios app on their phones. This could get much worse for so many more subscription services. Additionally, the TOS currently states apps are not allowed to direct a user to web services that use the browser, clearly to prevent subverting apple's tracking and extortion. Lastly, this means content will now be subject to Apple's terms on top of every service's existing terms, whether you use Apple devices or not. Anywhere there's a conflict, Apple's terms will win out in favor of removal or censorship.

I wonder how much of that 30% is cost of operations and how much is just corporate greed. Personally, I don't compute with fruit, but if I did, my frustration with this new policy would be great.

Shh! Don't give them ideas! 😨

Last Apple product I used in anger was a IIe about 1983. Wasn't especially impressed, like. Only thing for me is that I had to re-enter my email and card details once due to a glitch, wondering if iOS users will in those circumstances get hit with this "fee".

Yet another reason to Bin Apple off!
James Korman
So the Patreon app is free - just perform all of your transactions using a web browser.

How long before Apple sends me a bill for NOT buying an iPhone?
jtown5000
Right? I have been thinking “oh maybe I’ll get an old blackberry or something with a physical keyboard” but they probably wouldn’t even work.

Just as T-Mobile turn off 2G so you can't dig out your old Nokia or Ericsson.
David T
Imagine this happening with your web browser.

It's loathsome that Apple are in a position to be able to dictate terms on other platforms. We all need to vote with our wallets and choose alternatives. I'm all for Android, though still prefer using a PC over a phone where possible. I really hope people catch onto this before November and that you don't end up taking too much of a hit, Fran. 😞

As with many commenters here I don't use the iOS mobile app. I wonder what percentage of Patreon users manage their accounts from a mobile app. I'd guess it's small.
Bob Pockney
That's appalling. I've never had any truck with Apple products anyway.
DianaB
App will be deleted from my iPhone. Have used it only because commenting is simpler but will go back to a browser.
Nerdful Things
Don't worry, everyone follows apple. Soon to an android near you.
Keri Szafir
Wishing you a modded DMC-12 and lots of plutonium!
Keri Szafir
And completely bypassable unless you're someone who *HAS* to do it all on an iPhone.
Keri Szafir
"Mobile Everything" BS turning people into smombies in the streets.
Keri Szafir
I don't get it either.
Philip Stephens
Agreed, this is most likely the case. Which penalizes creators when their users choose a higher tier because they want to reward the creator.

I have an iPhone but I’ve never installed the Patreon app, I just watch the videos through the browser. I can’t believe Apple is pulling this stunt after the EU told them they must allow other payment providers. I guess they think the US government will never punish them.
Steven Ruhl
I can never understand the App fetish. Why use an App to view something you can see in your choice of browser?
Steven Ruhl
Tier upgrades will likely be counted as a new subscription.
Fred Patton
Generally good advice. Work through web sites. No reason to use an app. Kind of funny given that Patreon is always suggesting I should use the app. No thanks!
Scott Baxter
So five bucks is three-fifty to you, one-fifty to Apple?! Patron URL in description is my unsolicited and unnecessary advice.
CuriousMarc
What a shame.
Scott Hettel
I have an Iphone and I like it but I will not use many of their apps. I support you through my browser on the computer and that will not change.
Strawberry Puptart
This, there is no reason to make the product worse, just to accept payments in a mobile app.
Paul Blanco
Just switched to the Android app.
Michael A Berry
I wish Patreon would let the iOS app become a dashboard and not offer to collect money through the app. "Support" links just go to the the creator's website and hide support tiers in the app. Folks could be blissfully ignorant that paying through Apple is even an option. Knowing Apple, they probably don't allow that either. I imagine Patreon looked at something like this and decided upending their model to confirm the Apple Way was more beneficial to their own bottom line as well. 😞
William Alsing
App deleted! Patreon can be accessed by a browser in IOS.
jtown5000
I’m so tired of apple, and smartphones in general. I’m gonna go live like it’s 1985.
Uncle Phil
Disgusting capitalism. It's not even a real actual tax. Only the government gets taxes, don't they? Apple profits through, commission, surcharges, fees or whatever they wanna call it. Glad I'm with Android.
Drewski Brewski
That's a really grim precedent

Once again, Booo Apple.
