It occurs to me Chronicles of Riddick is something else that fits into the chasing The Matrix hype genre. Came to a lot of the same creative decisions, come to think of it.

That's a neat point! I think with Hitler and Stalin they are usually thought of as demagogues in the dumb guy version of 20th century history. I think it would be dumb-guy-apparent that that conflicts with the bad guy government gimmick here. As for Saddam I don't think in the run-up to Iraq there was much in the media about the actual nature of Saddam's regime or like scary videos of him that would leave much of an impression really, just endless lies about his supposed threat to the US.

It is telling that Kurt Wimmer didn't include stock footage of Hitler as a personification of evil in the prologue of Equilibrium, alongside Stalin and Saddam Hussien. Considering how easy it is to make comparisons to Hitler/the Third Reich, hyperbolic or apt, especially for dumb guys... the omission is conspicuous. Everything else in the film is the most trite dystopian sci-fi tropes, but no Third Reich allusions. Very peculiar.
