Just found it the reason the trade federation is in the Senate scenes - Lucas intended their support for the separatists to be a secret: https://youtu.be/YUXr-kLQh5w Only the audience knows that Dooku is working behind the scenes *with* the republic corporations to fund the separatists, who are apparently a non-corporate political movement that we simply never see

Episode III is somehow both the best prequel and the prequel I've seen the least number of times. My mom had no interest in Star Wars and my stepdad dragged her to see this one, and he slept through the entire thing. She was pissed at him for a while after that one.
