605 - Foreign Policy: The Wire Edition feat. Derek Davison (2/24/22)
🕑 Added 2022-02-24 17:35:49 +0000 UTCSo, we recorded an in depth Ukraine update with Derek on Tuesday evening, and obviously now the update needs to be updated. So Derek leads us off with some context and what we know of the Russia/Ukraine situation as of the morning of Thursday, 2/24, then we go back and cover how we got up to here. Then finally, for even more context, we have a piece from noted Foreign Policy expert Terrell Jermaine Starr on how everything about Vladimir Putin can be made clear through a close reading of HBO’s The Wire.

American prestige is a cuck podcast because they blocked me on Patreon as their tribute to the brave Azov fighters of the Ukraine. American Exception is where it’s at.

Worth it just for the comments on this one

the comments section for this episode is the most “i’ve never had bitches” shit i’ve ever seen in my life god fuckin damn
I’m watching Winter On Fire on Netflix. It’s so far a good piece of perspective about the Ukrainian Revolution or Coup. It’s very compelling when you watch it, that it was a popular democratic movement that overthrew the Pro-Putin government. I recommend everyone watch this as part of any other information you’re consuming on the situation in Ukraine. I’d love to hear what Chapo hosts have to say about the film. As well I’d like to hear from any expert guests on the films perspective and how it relates to the current situation.

There's hardly anything specifically wrong with the takes. Some incorrect takes on sanctions but overall rather benign and Derek gives himself a way out of most statements. Maybe they could have opened with the Ukrainian choir after SNL was finished and opened with them. More to speed for some of you.

Not a bad ep, once you get past the beginning. Near the end Felix and Dan both suggest that Russia probably can’t handle a full blown occupation of Ukraine. This might yet shape up to be true.

Bessner and Christman could do an Ukraine Hingepoints episode.

This was a good episode. People act like they said “there will absolutely be no invasion and the Ukraine are the second coming of nazi Germany.” I mean, it was kinda funny hearing Derek go full Reagan in the intro with “I don’t remember what I said”, but no need to go full Karen let me see the manager I want my money back in the comments (I only do that when they talk too much about video games).

I hate my job, and wanted to quit and do something like trade cryptocurrencies and NFTs, but in the past few days I changed my mind and now I want to be a keyboard warrior for the Ukraine.
