671 - The Inebriated Past 13: So Far From God feat. Matt Karp (10/13/22)
🕑 Added 2022-10-13 22:46:45 +0000 UTCIn one of our various irregular series, Matt's going to be taking a look at the history of Mexico and U.S.-Mexican relations through time. These eps are going to feature Matt with some guests in conversation, starting with our 19th century All-Star Matt Karp. Matt and Matt are talking about the U.S.-Mexico war, which, if you've listened to Hell of Presidents, you'll know is (at least here in the states) a kind of under-discussed foundational moment in all of the rest of our shared histories. They discuss the motivations for the war, the Mexican political perspective, the course of the conflict, root beer, the Irish, death by diarrhea, and much more.

Honestly found this one kinda hard to follow. The conversation w/ Karp was good, but the thing I'm really into the Inebriated Pasts for are the historical stories, and this one was kinda all over the place
BureaucracyNow
Seems like Karp might have been cool at some point but damn all academics gotta be citing their sources in the most annoying ways “I wrote a dissertation on whatever the fuck” “I just reviewed a book about blah blah blah.” Just say the underlying fact, skip the clout check.
Chris
Jesus effing Christ, I REALLY struggled to get thru this due to the horrid state of Karp’s audio track. Homey needs to take a class in microphone techniques.

Guys, I found the dipshit who thinks they're the only member of the audience. Yknow what's boring? Reading your stupid ass comment on my favorite segment. Fuck off.
teacup
I see a comment like this on almost every episode these days lol. They're releasing more stuff than ever, sorry you don't like some of their segments...

If you touch the 2 little verticle rectangles on your screen, the episode will magically stop and you will be free to fuck off forever

I took a count of episodes not long ago over a 3-month span and about a half to 2/3rd eps are "dry boys read the news paper", the rest was evenly distributed between Movie Mindsets, Live Eps, and eps where the dry boys are joined by a guest, either for the entire ep, or for just a segment, and most of *those* are mostly just current event talks and yet people are always whining when they're not just doing a dry boys news paper ep. At some point if you want to know what's today's politics twitter drama you can just go on twitter.

go listen to NPR or dan carlin or slow burn or something

Congratulations on showing how little you know about how 90% of podcasts are produced. Obviously there is plenty of freeform discussion, but you think your favorite history podcasts aren't following a general outline or script to make sure they stay on track? Even TV re-watch podcasts follow scripts; grow up
Daffy
I think these are great. History is a weapon. Some of you grey wolves have very limp wrists. Do some training.
Daffy
'the script' in podcasting is like the 'just read the slides' of presentations. If everything you're going to say is already written out, why am I listening to it? Except for specific cases like stage and screen, scripts are always rewritten or ignored. Scripted conversations are fake and boring and I can always tell when I'm listening to a podcast that still uses them.
the ayatollah of rocknrolla
not everything has to be for you david. if you dont like good content then you are free to not listen
Dang
Yeah I know that's the premise but drunk people following a script can be good content too lol
NicksYourMate
No
David
Holy fuck this is so goddamn boring. Fuck off with these things, just do real episodes ffs
Jonah Stocks ladd
theyre drunk man lay off

Matt K clearly knows what he's talking about but he needs to bring a script or be more tightly interviewed / fed events to comment on next time, in my humble opinion. Hard to follow his stream of facts at times.

McClellan was in the Mexican War on Scott’s staff with RE Lee, Joe Johnston, and PGT Beauregard. He was part of the West Point Class of 1846, which was the last one to graduate in time to participate in the war.
