He appeared at the end of one of their live events recently and said like one line to close out the night. So he must be well on his way to rehabilitation!

I'm like 87% sure it is "Battle Cry of Freedom," composed around the Civil War era by George F. Root. In fact I'm like 85% sure it is the version from Ken Burns' "Civil War" (in hindsight, full of a lot of the Lost Cause myth), played by Jaqueline Schwab: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou9RmnACtHM&list=OLAK5uy_kHgIZvTVtISi13BC0WEEimFa7VteWOY-s&index=4

Extremely late and probably won’t be seen, but can anyone tell what song is playing under Matt when he’s discussing the Gettysburg Address at 1:08:00?

On a fourth relisten or so...any news on Matt's status? Hope he's doing well

"hacks, appointees, and Democrats." the more things change... damn.

I didn’t know Franklin Pierce didn’t swear in on a Bible. I remember learning somewhere that John Quincy Adams didn’t because to him it went against the separation of church and state. I think about that sometimes when Christian nationalists invoke the founding fathers (although he was a founding son, TBF).

I used to share his movies on Jazz & the Blues with my high school students. His aesthetic values I agree, Chris, are overall solid. He's also good with finding archive video, of course, but not fit to shine the shoes of (2 time Chapo guest) Adam Curtis, I think we'd also agree. & yes, I'm a lot older than y'all (a dreaded Boomer) so having seen friends' older brothers come home from 'Nam, I never for a minute believed that "We meant well" shite!!

a) what can I say, he's an effective filmmaker, especially for making history pre-motion picture feel "alive" while still relying on real images & primary sources and (b) yes absolutely about vietnam, he's better the further back in time we go. I especially enjoy his Prohibition series and "The West", which he didn't actually direct, but was produced in his style under his production company

“Nettleton” aka “Come thou fount of every blessing”. I felt compelled to look it up before I saw your comment, very catchy tune.

Hard to believe the 2 of you like Ken Burns!! The shit lib who made an entire documentary about how "We meant well" while slaughtering 2.5 million Vietnamese "gooks". He's a reactionary piece of dung, burnishing the Empire's reputation.

can anyone tell me what the song that plays briefly at 34:45 is?

Chris and Matt’s commentary on how Lincoln evolved his views on slavery during the war is among the best stuff the show has ever produced. Great work, gentlemen.

How can yall mention Lincoln and the Radical Republicans without mentioning the 48ers?

Genuinely one of the best American history podcasts I've listened through. Done it multiple times, always get something new out of it. Matt's great insights, Chris's amazing editing and color, plus the chemistry of the Chapo history corps.... I know I'm fangirling here, but just really want to thank you guys for the fantastic content.

if you liked this one strongly recommend Matt Christman guesting on Radio War Nerd episode 315 to talk about ur-socialist German immigrants who had the correct idea about slavery way before most other belligerents
The Children of Jack Acid
Goddam it why am I awake at 5:48 a.m.? The Chapo history episode is nice, though.
