Same with Mexico...complicated, but much of the "founders" there were also a lot more radical than in the US. And for very similar reasons. Not even worth comparing them to Haiti, for obvious reasons....

I think it’s also an indictment against the founders character when you compare the figure of Simon Bolivar, the guy who would unite and liberate Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Panama*, and Bolivia from Spain. He became fiercely anti-slavery simply because of his combat experience with slaves fighting for their freedom. Less than 30 years later and the same ‘class’ as the founders, but had a reckoning based on experienced humanity. In particular, I think it’s notable Washington failed to grow in that respect *(Panama isnt a real country)
