Chapo sets a high bar for intellectual stimulation. LOL
nwp
oh come on lmao. that movie is fun
Kevin Kromenacker
Ngl, I was stoked to check out Will's recommendations that I hadn't seen until he mentioned that he liked Barbarian. Can't take his reccos seriously ever again
I have truly tried to get my friends to watch Phil Tippet's Mad God and they will not buy in to it, which is a true shame. I'm glad to see that atleast someone out there also enjoyed seeing this visionary display the suffering and of his artistic process. The guy basically had a massive breakdown trying to achieve his vision, and after viewing it, it's understandable why.
PJ Martinez
On the topic of fucked up Pinocchio movies, I can't recommend Roberto Benigni's Pinocchio from 2019 enough. It is one of the most horrifying movies I've ever seen and I loved it. What's especially fun is finding reviews from moms who put it on for their kids and usually turned it off around the time Pinocchio gets lynched.
James Lloyd
Uh same theme song as Movies Vs. Capitalism ??
Dick Van Sexel
Hold on to your potatoes
etienne
wubba lubba dub damn
I am become reply guy
Rick and Morty swept it
Ben Nadeau
Get Will Sloan of the Important Cinema Club as well as Michael & Us on the show asap. He's got Oscar fever like you wouldn't believe! Fever of 107 degrees!!
Adam Whitley
Chapo continues having the worst movie opinions of all time.
Poppy Chulo
I enjoyed Bones and All but it definitely isn't oscar material. I will say if Michael Stuhlbarg had been given a main role he could have been up as best actor. He stole the scene he was in.
John Mitchell
lol
Brendan Costello
Really? You think so?
Christopher Price
The South Korean academy is not a fan of Park for whatever reasons, so he doesn't get any support during awards season, despite his sterling career.
Caitlyn Rae
Bones & All got snubbed on all fronts ☠️
Sean Marshall
I give this new series 5 wet mouths 👄👄👄👄👄
Finn
Stoked for the movie miniseries!
Luke B
I may have missed it mentioned on the podcast, but I highly recommend “Decision To Leave” from director Park Chan-wook. Overlooked for best international feature at the very least.
Matt Boi
Too many haters in the comments, you will be against the wall when the movie heads take control 🔫
Sam McManus
I think the better part of Tar's talent is an emperor's new clothes kind of deal. Her book sucks, and most of what she says in eg the classroom scene is just "neither a borrower nor a lender be" sophist nonsense that sounds smart but doesn't ultimately mean much. Like when she's trying to tell the orchestra how she wants them to play, her wife/kapellmeister has to stand up and actually explain what she's trying to get at. If nothing else, a conductor without an orchestra is just some dickhead waving their arms around
Sam McManus
I don't really buy the "it was all a dream" thing. To me, the reason it feels so unreal toward the end is because she's depersonalizing. Her whole identity is a projection made possible by the work and assent of people "below" her, so when she pushed her privilege too far and that bottom falls out, she loses touch with basically everything and everyone around her. Honestly I'm surprised Marxists haven't taken more ownership of it, it's a pretty withering look at "rugged capitalists" who jerk themselves off over their intelligence and authority while high society applauds like the Victorians watching Alex fuck at the end of A Clockwork Orange but would completely collapse if their workers walked off the job.
Michael Warren
Failing Chapo Trap House.
Poppy Chulo
It's charming in the first act, gets progressively worse in the second act, and by the third act you'll be exhausted.
I am become reply guy
Casey Kiesling
Glad to here them dunking on Nomadland, a dreary boring film with a ten minute advertisement for Amazon jammed in the middle of it. Would have liked to here some love for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, The Menu, and Puss in Boots, which all slapped.
Luke Witherell
Man, some of this was very fun and funny, and some of it was legit the worst movie criticism I've ever heard
I'm a Sentient Lichen - and so can YOU!!
You forgot to mention Sarah Polley's best film: The Sweet Hereafter
Bernard Keenan
Inish Erin is Irish for island of Ireland. He's out of his lane here too. The film is fucking awful
danny
i just teared up at the name jenny the donkey damn
Sam Schick
I think I’ll watch Tar again and look for that Mulholland Drive take, I thought it was good but I took it more as a movie for people who love their New Yorker tote and want to feel dangerous. Also yeah liberal guilt is ruining the fun but there is just a lot of entertainment in watching people encounter difficulties on their 10,000 vacations.
Casey
Lost respect for Hesse for liking so many things in the terrible Triangle of Sadness
Son of El Topo
Imagine counting the dildo fight as a strike against a movie.
Son of El Topo
Why is Will's Elvis impersonation exactly the same as his Stallone impression?
Poppy Chulo
Everybody else?
foxy
i hate movies
Jim McKenna
Such a good episode. It helps so much that I love to listen to Will and Hesse talk. Both have such a clean clear style that is so pleasing.
Jim McKenna
I agree. This trope has to die a hard death. I will buy and ship the hammer to you.
Maxkrause817
I HATE this guest, horrible takes, what a strawberry
J.P. McD.
It’s the ghost of the suicide girl
Sam
Amazing episode 0. I cannot wait for the rest of the episodes (and I cannot wait for you two to tear into Babylon it was so awful)
Jordan Brewer
Nomadland I saw for the first time a few months ago and it was just so boring. It’s the most plain the friends we made along the way movie. I pray she settled down with David Strathairn at the end cuz she was gonna off someone or drive the RV off a cliff
Brett Anders
Stoked!!
Aidan Gray
What do people think about the scene in Tar where she’s alone trying to compose and you briefly see a young woman in standing her apartment in the background of a shot? Always confused me
SH
It’s insane Aftersun didn’t get more nominations tbh.
Patrick Taffe
Great, now I'm going to have "i lobe my monshtairs" rent free in my head until the day i die, thanks Will
John LaConte
Hell yeah Will thanks
T
The Spielberg closet isn't the male closet but the young closet, allegedly. As Matt says, Temple of Doom is Spielberg's most autobiographical movie.
J.P. McD.
Guessing you saw about 3 movies last year and 8 total horror movies released in the last decade?
Dick Van Sexel
I took my kids to see a lot of movies aimed at their age group this year. Puss in boots was a pleasant surprise, and worth a watch . They loved jaws in imax; my daughter is still mad quint dies.lol
Peter T.
No, it sucked
calvin kilby
Naruto
John Leavitt
The reaction to ToS by some cultural creators is cause the movie points directly to them and says you are also the problem no matter how dark and ridiculous you think the rich are. Also Spielberg’s movies are sexless cause he’s deeply closeted. I’m not sure which closet but he has big weird closet vibes. Deeply square.
Movie Donkey
Fuck you for not liking Triangle of Sadness, Will
Cleo
I saw Tár in a completely empty theater ripped out of my mind best movie experience of my life
J P 3
Triangle of Sadness benefits from an intermission between the second and third acts, but it's not a bad movie. I didn't think it was laugh out loud funny, but it doesn't suck either. The action in Östlund's movies also tends to be driven more by plot and theme than by characters, which is what it is.
Poppy Chulo
Not really, she/he didn't add anything to the podcast. Menaker and Christman would be a better combo.
Andrew M
which anime is The Whale based off of
Dany
Countries nominate Best Foreign Film. Not the academy.
Robert Calcagno
If I have to do one correction with Tár, which I thought was phenomenal, you DO actually see a student at the top of the auditorium during the single take shot.
Anthony Hoffman
Parasite is better
Anthony Hoffman
It’s such an unfunny, cringey little shit. He doubled down during his Jimmy Fallon appearance saying he was trying to make the show “fun” and we should all shut up because we’re “geriatric.”
James Browning
Excellent episode! Mad God respek! Looking forward to the new series. Following up Beer George with some movies.
Kyle Smyth
All I can say is we're only a few years into the 'multiverse' trend and I already wish I could kill it with a hammer. I pray EEAAO doesn't win just so we can be done with that idea before they use it as a pretext to do the most obnoxious franchise crossover movies of all time
Of course
Like the NYTimes converting itself from a newspaper into specialized, topical newsletters... Chapo is making a similar brand-leveraging move with Hell on Earth and Movie Mindset.
Pod Ween Satan
Haven’t seen The Fableman’s yet but It’s worth noting that Don Simpson often told a story of when he fell in love with the movies and decided to become a filmmaker. He watched The Greatest Show on Earth as a kid in small town Alaska and his mission on Earth became clear. Funny to think that legendary maniac Don Simpson and legendary family centric filmmaker Steven Spielberg were both inspired by the same movie…probably at the exact same time.
MG
I liked All Quiet. It had a good soundtrack and the german actors were good. It was a nice update. Not best picture though.
etienne
I love when darron aronofsky makes a movie that's like "what if a guy was *insanely* cringe"
Marcus Wrightus
This was a very pleasant listen.
what_an_answer
The whale is just the wrestler again but worse. But brendan was good at least
Daniel
Every dollar I’ve spent on this podcast has been worth it for the development of the Menaker Movie Mindset™️™️ philosophy
J Vladcliff
I am here for Movie Mindset, looks like I will be keeping my subscription after Hell on Earth
Yeah but in my defense
Looking forward to more Movie Mindset. Hesse is a great cohost.
Null_null
Re Tar. Was the film trying to convey that she was a dogshit composer? I got that impression from those quiet moments in her studio. And when she plays for that cellist she wants to bang and the cellist is condescendingly like “oh yeah this is so good.” Reminded me of Griffin Mill and the How to Write a Screenplay in 21 Days book he keeps in his desk.
Null_null
The Hasan Minaj Celeb Jeopardy episode is so satisfying if you wanna see an unfunny loser eat shit in a competition designed to be easier than Kids Jeopardy. And I’m not suggesting that winning that competition is any indicator of high intelligence, but losing in the way in which he did is truly telling.
Walking Bones
Love hearing from Hesse, hope we get more of her on Movie Mindset
Post Void
Never heard of those last couple mentioned. RRR and Mad God seems absolutely amazing.
Shartk
Chapo media empire expansion pack slays 💚
PrincessNukem64x
Decided to pay this month's sub just to tell you you're wrong and you're a loser.
Poppy Chulo
Everything everywhere all at once became exhausting by the third act. It's overrated, like on the same level as Parasite.
James Murray
Hesse is a vapid, giggling, uninteresting mess who adds next to nothing in terms of insight despite talking half of the time. Holy shit.
Arthur G. Pym
Lexg go on Movie Mindset podcast
Dan
Omg, Birdman is one of the worst movies that I've ever seen; very recent-filmschool-grad.
Dyyyyylan
Hesse rules
Bob Johnson
Thank you for Chris for shouting out Three Thousand Years (and Northman, of course). It’s a sweet romance twinged with tragedy and plenty of weirdness; it’s also a very aesthetically pleasing movie. Basically no one saw it in theaters, so it’s nice to hear it receive some recognition
DP
Folks, unfortunately, this sucks
Caesaro
“Details inside” where?
Isaac Jones
Please tell me what other movies you hated, I need recommendations for what's good
Poppy Chulo
Being an effette condescending fuckstick is not a substitute for a personality.
Gordon Schmidt
Smiling at all the people who didn't think Tar was amazing. There's so much to chew on in that movie. It deserves Best Picture just for that scene where she's jogging in the park and hears screaming, but can't find the source. It's a dry comedy and a horror film. You're missing out and you may never know why. It's kind of sad...
Percle
you seem like someone who knows a thing or two about personality
Kamran Husain
barbarian was the best picture of the year prove me wrong
Jake Bolton
Y'all are way off. Triangle of Sadness was fantastic, hilarious satire. I reveled in watching all those wealthy people shitting and vomiting all over themselves. Loved the role reversal on the island. Also, Tar was boring as shit and Will is projecting way more meaning than is warranted. And Elvis was awful.
Percle
Yeah movies that require object permanence are for soyboys, they should just give best picture to a laser pointer.
J.P. McD.
Saw all the BP noms that year and it was by far my worst
Poppy Chulo
Tar is a film for people who find watching flies fuck too action packed.
zach
this is so good
Benjamin O Levine
Can’t believe chapos just copying the E1 episode she was on only real smh
James Wallace
Doing yourselves a disservice not watching Puss in Boots. It's highly entertaining
Karlo
No Will the important part about the third act in Triangle of Sadness is that that luxury hotel is already on the island
Crosley Querin
True Willheads taking the dub. Matt and Felixcels left seething. Let's fucking go.
Alex Payne
Honestly so stoked for this series
Luis Zamarripa
She was incredible in The Menu. Her delivery of “Tortillas Deliciosas” was pure gold
Rohmer Simpson
Hong Chau’s 4ish minutes in her POKER FACE episode are much more worthwhile than anything in or concerning THE WHALE. She’s also arguably the best part of Alexander Payne’s underrated DOWNSIZING.
T
Animation is the worst, most corrupt category at the Oscars. Disney wins every time.
Damen Irving
Super looking forward to what you guys do in October. A chapo-curated horror marathon sounds amazing
T
Erm... that's Billy Crystal and I'm calling the ADL.
Garrett Robinson
EVERYONE PLEASE WATCH RRR OR AT LEAST GOOGLE RRR DANCE SCENE. Thanks
Cory Gipson
Describing Babylon as the most “bozo mode” movie is incredibly apt, I haven’t been able to put my finger on it until now.

Two many hosts, not enough personality. I'll take cushvlog over this.
Max Cool
Sorry I’m really high so that comment was redundant
Max Cool
Will, thank you for mentioning Crimes of the future, it’s mention at the end was much appreciated
Damen Irving
The idea Spielberg made a movie that says movies are made by perverts for perverts is incredible
Ozzie
Mad God was phenomenal. Absolute snub for best animated feature
Chris Villalobos
Please do an episode on Babylon!
Taylor Borie
I was just about to comment that!!! Will has become Jacques-pilled
Ben Carter

Ozzie
Osc osc osc Oscar fever!
pepto_azymuth
I hope there is some Tàr talk
Eclectic Beast
Will and Hesse need an even bigger movie nerd on their podcast. They could have tied Sarah Polley’s previous film “Take this Waltz” where Michelle Williams cheats on Seth Rogen to The Fabelmans, where Michelle Williams cheats with Seth Rogen.
Elai Kehler
LETS FUCKING GO
Brian Betz
As I understand it, with the best international feature, each country decides what the one movie they’ll send to represent them is, not the studios or the academy. So India apparently didn’t want to submit RRR
Daniela
when’s the babylon ep
HamDrawn
Oh hell yeah, menaker mindset edibles need to hit the market asap. Cannabis industry get on it.
UNDRESS_ME
Oh, thanks for reviewing these films, I found some of them quite interesting, I might check them out
Tyler Barton
Thank GOD for Hesse, because I was intrigued by Expedition Content when it came up on a previous episode (when chapo was dragging AO Scott). I remember feeling disappointed that it was flatly judged as being drivel. Vindicated by today's episode!
Robert Cullimore
Loving some of these recommendations, really enjoyed the menu and smile
Matthew
love this shit can’t wait for more 🫡
MTH
Of course, I was also moved by the last episode of Black Adder.
MTH
Was excited to hear what you all thought of All Quiet, I was surprisingly moved by it, and I usually don’t about war movies. Disappointed neither saw it. My fave of the year measured by emotional response
THEKILLERWHALE
I HAVE MOVIE MINDSETTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Poppy Chulo
Check YouTube, will did a noaul schrader episode on another movie podcast and it was pretty good. Just type "will menaker discusses Paul Schrader"

I needed this shit. Thanks guys
Sir Kev The Perv
I m looking forward to Movie Mindset but I would also love more Time for my stories or This is SUS. Specifically something focusing on political shows like the Good Fight or Scandal.
Oatmeal
Hesse rocks so much, so excited for this

This is what it's all about. Let's fucking go!!

this mini-series is going to be amazing... loved this ep, thank you Will & Hesse!

Another Oscars pity award: Dennis Hopper for Hoosiers the year after Blue Velvet
VAN Fan
Are you brain damaged
Poppy Chulo
This was a political analysis podcast at one point, I remember because that's why I subscribed.
Kenny Hedges
Of course horror is ignored around Oscar season, so it was nice to hear Barbarian come up. I also quite liked Australia's Sissy, and think you might as well.
Bass Fishing '87
This isnt about the guest, its about making Will more conversational.
Isaac
Move over Siskel n Ebert 👏
James Blackmon
Loved it. Looking forward to future episodes.

Like everybody else, sad to see you guys snub Decision to Leave, been really disappointed in how little love that movie has gotten

Thanks for this episode. Since I'm not in a very good mood today, you cheered me up a little during these 2 hours.

I love how much Will loves movies lmao
nadia
i couldn’t be happier about this
Trew Dhiel
Wish Grogg Turkington "the oscer doctor" could have made it.
Luis Zamarripa
I know next to nothing of Indian/Pakistani politics outside of realizing that Modi/BJP/RSS are bad and I could tell from the very first minutes that the movie would have an intense reactionary and nationalist vibe. Seeing both RRR and Top Gun receive immense praise in the same year makes me feel like I’m living the “Tomorrow Belongs to Me” scene from Cabaret
Peter Gorman
“indudated”
calvin kilby
Good episode.
Thomas Carroll
I literally have to listen to this entire ep again bc I didn't write down anything and I really want to see some of these. FAk
brodie
So hype to become aligned with the movie mindset.
Thomas Carroll
Can I say something? I really enjoyed this episode
Thomas Carroll
You guys talked about like 40 movies and I can't remember any of them. How do you find time to watch all these movies???
Joe Bowden
Every Indian and Pakistani person I bring up RRR to say it’s pretty fascist. I mean I enjoyed watching it but I think will doesn’t get what’s going on with the politics of the film
Tom Danner
