Mac daddy

Matt mentioned the Campbells massacring the McDonald's still being a big part of Scottish lore and that is 100% true, got an anecdote about that: Years ago me and a friend were at a nightclub in Melbourne and we ended up talking to these 2 huge Scottish guys, and we were asking them about our surnames (both Australian,I'm a McKenzie my mate is a campbell). These guys were like rugby players around our age (22) and their response to me was "aww McKenzie's are shaggers" but pretty friendly. But when they heard "Campbell" one of them literally spat and said "Ya never trust a fookhen Camp-bell" lmfao this shit is so deeply ingrained. (Fuck this is long already, but I gotta say how much I miss out big boy Matt spitting about history)

Chuck Skooch

some light listening for folks that need more. would love to get a playlist going for "100yrs War Bangers" https://youtu.be/5vX8i7zFLDg?si=9xAbevcHNiXjw6kv

Cody

This hurts to listen to now. I'm glad Matt is getting better!

“Hey folks, got a special guest for you today. Why don’t you introduce yourself.” “What’s up everyone, I’m John Calvin, it’s great to be here.” “So, let’s get into it. You’re known for a peculiar theological stance that’s at odds with Catholicism. As my listeners know, I’m not a big fan of those indulgent idiots, so tell us, what exactly is predestination?” “Wow, what a great question. Yeah, so…”

TalkToPlantsNotCops

Idk if Martin Luther would be a reddit or Twitter guy but he'd absolutely be a podcast guy. Possibly also a YouTube guy.

Kamran Husain

a hell on earth dad cap that says big h.o.e. guy

Rev. Dallas Dupont

Great job on the series! Stoked for Hell of a Picture: i’d highly recommend JD Connor’s 2 books on the New Hollywood culture industry, he’s faculty at USC so deep in the belly of the beast

David den Daas

17 posts?! these are wet boy numbers. weak bulbs.

Connor Sullivan

"Was she an actual Habsburg or did she just marry into it?" What's the difference lmfao

Posting this cuz I hope it adds to the conversation: there’s a great chapter in “transgender warriors” by socialist activist Leslie Feinberg, the chapter details the long history of English peasants rebelling against the feudal and even up into the 1700’s, and the men would dress as women charging into battle. Feinberg lays out how pre-Christian England had much more fluid and diverse gender roles, even describing Joan of Arc as a sort of transgender people’s champion, widely supported by French peasantry, in part mobilized because of her gender expression. The Catholic Church also co-opted transness for a while, but always sharpening things towards the patriarchal: women could wear beards and become priests and clergy for a while, but men could not transition or become feminized. Also, to keep the choir boy’s voices high pitched, rather than allow women to sing, they would castrate boys so they could sing longer. And they say the left is mutilating children!

We didn't start the fire rocked 🤣

Too late but you need to stop shitting on J.B. Peck's book just because the movie was so bad. It's a better existentialist novel than Nausea or the Stranger.

Hall wingfield

Thank you for a great series Matt & Chris

If you ever get to creating that material history of Hollywoof miniseries, you'll want to reach out to Peter Labuza, who's been up to his eyeballs in exactly that for nigh on a decade at this point. For ex if a Golden Age movie star's contract has been archived at some university somewhere, chances are he's read it and can quote from it. Here's his Substack: https://substack.com/profile/11472-peter-labuza

Clammy_Damp

Why Prussia and not Sweden? My goodness, how are you missing it: the Deluge! Sweden thinks it can take Lithuania on as a junior partner and bitch slap Poland. It manages to kill a lot of Poles, but can't seal the deal. The Swedes, not really caring and needing some help, free the Elector of Brandenburg from his feudal duties in Prussia, an autonomous backwater that's a fief of Poland. The Poles start to come back and, needing some help, grant the Elector of Brandenburg the same deal. Poland is permanently crippled, Lithuania is no longer able to pull anything like asking Sweden to invade and stuck being a junior partner to an increasingly pathetic Poland, Sweden is unable to expand further, and the Elector of Brandenburg has a territory without some Polish king or some pesky Habsburg looking over his shoulder. It's in the name, folks! We don't talk about how Brandenburg took over Germany, even though that's what really happened. We talk about its backwater tucked away to the east and detached from Germany.

Speaking of modern Hapsburgs, I know an interesting guy named Felix who is something of a Hapsburg-obsessed amateur historian and genealogist. I would really get into it with him when I was reading Wedgwood’s book. Only later did I learn he was the subject of a documentary about his relationship to Otto von Hapsburg: Felix Austria! (2013).

Starcult

Wanted to say big thanks for this series, really enjoyed it! I'm Swedish so it's fun hearing about Swedish-related history stuff for the outsiders perspective :) It's funny how all the neo-nazi nutters here love Charles XII but there is no real love for Gustavus Adolphus. He's obviously the cooler king!

Doug Cartel

anybody looking for any podcasts about russian history in any era/topic should start at Sean's Russia Blog (He's on hiatus and renaming it but there's a ton of stuff there).

New England would be less shit if it leaned into its hard cider history a little more instead of trying to make 900 IPAs all the time

Patrick Schütz

Doesn’t Faust get drunk in Dresden or Leipzig. How about Wittenberg, Magdeburg ? Start in Wittenberg then do Leipzig and Dresden swing up to Magdeburg and finish in Berlin

Braedon

Oh, hell in Spain is coming? Guess I won’t kill myself.

I honestly didn't like Hell on Earth at first but now I'm sad to see it go. Good job

Carl anderson

Chris check out An Empire of Their Own by Neal Gabler about how mid 20th century Hollywood movies were shaped by Jewish immigrants’ idealized view of the American dream

skrrt vonnegut

when a smoked beer hits it REALLY hits.

Patrick Banks

If Chapo goes for more Euro content, they could talk about Gunther Fehlinger (Austrian guy who soyfaces all across the Balkans haranguing those countries to join NATO/the EU)

Christopher Price

I have an ancestor who was a privateer during Queen Anne's War if anyone is interested in that. Apparently he was also William Penn's shabbos goy but for violence.

Idk if you guys are into plays but mother courage and her children by Bertolt Brecht is an excellent play about the 30 years war

D.O.D

That outro song delivered the goods. "Salivating Ottomans" lol

David Andrews

You guys did an extraordinary job with this series.

Slamp

Thank you for explaining the difference between Caeser and Luther. All the folks that couldn't seem to wrap their heads around the incredibly different material and social conditions created by the printing press were driving me crazy in the comments. Similarly, the people that can't seem to grasp how different the systems of credit that developed in the 2 centuries after the black death were compared to the systems of credit that existed prior, make me feel like I'm beating my head against the wall trying to explain it. This period truly was world changing, and y'all did a magnificent job of breaking it down. From one late medieval/early modern history nerd to another: thank you!

Johan Stefonski

Congratulations boys. Very well done.

Yairo Martis

Looking forward to the 'Hell's-a-poppin'' miniseries.

Got to respect that drip Matt wore for the stream, that's what I call popping collars

Putting in a rec for Dresden on a German tour. You got your Military History Museum, you got the hills that villagers hid from the Swedes in. It's nice. There's also the Zwinger, which feels a bit more 18th century but has pretty awesome scientific instruments and porcelain collections (see a tubby elector astride a horse! in the same medium as your toilet!)

I like that there is basically 30 minutes of Matt and Chris basically just saying let's run away to Germany and look at fields together. It's been a hell of a show I'm super excited to hear all these side shows come together

Kamran Husain

MUGAL representation finally on chapo

Patrick LeJeune

17th century we didn’t start the fire slapped, and I think the one theater one episode approach to the 7 years war is the way to go. It reminds me of Mike Duncan’s strategy for the 1848 revolutions, which really worked

Y’all rule, please keep doing series like this ♥️

Love the trashing of Dutch. It’s like German with a brain injury. Also I only care about the German words. Everything else, meh.

Ardy Rezv

Any history podcast you two put out, I will listen to.

James Cook

This was phenomenal. One of the best history podcast productions I've ever heard. Right up there with Ghosts of the Ostfront. Seriously, y'all should be proud. Thank you all so much ♥️♥️♥️
