MM27 - CATS!

On this episode Will Massacre and Hexxa Deni kick things off with two movies about the spookiest animal of them all: Cats.
First up in the The Black Cat (Ulmer, 1934) horror movie gods Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff menace a wholesome American couple with their evil European sex perversion in an Art Deco fortress.
Then in Cat People (Tourneur, 1942) an ancient curse turns a nice Serbian woman’s repressed sexuality into a leopard… or does it?
In both these films ignorant Americans fall prey to the deep, occult evils of Europe and a past they think they’re free of. Also there are cats.

EERRRR ACKTHUALLY the town of Niagara Falls would have looked much better in the pre-war era before the majority of the historical downtown was demolished for highways and surface parking lots. I would have expected a journeyman numtot like Will to be well aware of this

Another thread connecting the two films: Art Deco was heavily influenced by Egyptian Revival following the excavation of Tutankhamun's tomb in the early '20s. Also great to see a return of the sword-cane, weapon of choice for Dr. Pennyfarthing/Quackenbush.

The actress who plays the lady at the restaurant who greets Irena was dubbed by Simone Simon. Tom Conway (Dr. Judd) was born Tom Sanders, and his brother was George Sanders (ALL ABOUT EVE). He plays a character named Dr. Louis Judd in Lewton's amazing THE SEVENTH VICTIM, although there's no real reason to believe they're the same person. He's also one of the leads in I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, maybe the best thing Lewton - and Tourneur - ever made. Not-very-prolific but underrated writer-director Albert Lewin (THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY, PANDORA AND THE FLYING DUTCHMAN) made only one movie in CinemaScope, THE LIVING IDOL (1957), and it was his last. It's not some kind of lost masterpiece but it's kind of a stealth remake of CAT PEOPLE, with a haunted idol standing in for a panther at the Central Park Zoo.

Two of my all time favorites from this period. Watched The Black Cat last year with a group Of people who had never seen it before and assumed it would just be silly. Really enjoyed their total silence during the climax.
