When I was in the Merchant Marine servicing oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico in 1980-81 I was out of Morgan City, Louisiana, but we had to spend about 3 weeks posted in Port Arthur-- a true hellhole, gas flares continuous & stinking, racist Mexican hating scum. (Happy ending-- after 6+ months I earned enough to move to New Orleans. Never as happy to get out of anywhere until I left Honduras for Nicaragua a few years later.)
