Definitely pulled me in. I loved the tension, gave me a similar feeling to that first scene in Inglourious Basterds. The only thing that pulled me out a bit was trying to figure out in my head exactly what was going on when Simson was trying to finish off Avi. A few minor things with the prose seemed off but Im no expert, just a few parts didn't have as smooth of a feel. 9/10 I want more from this world for sure.

Sorry it took me a while, but I finally read this today. Very good indeed, and I'm not just flattering you. You managed to get me to care about the family in just a few paragraphs so that I was genuinely upset by the death of the children. To me this feels more like a prologue than a 1st chapter, if you're doing a prologue.

Avi snapped Sylli's neck just before the canonball hit her. Thats the snap that is heard by Simsun just before it hit Avi.

When you have a chance to go through it, let me know if this kind of feedback is helpful to you. I’m happy to do it if it is but it is somewhat time consuming.

Also a little bit about the table Simsum and his son had made. This may not be helpful, because you may not want to go a little more in depth on these things.

This is a great first chapter for your magic, but does it fit the rest of your story? Does all this death correlate to the rest of the story. I like it, but from what I hear most of what happens in a book is on a ship, if that's the case I would say no, but if this shows a side of the main plot then go for it. It gets quite violent quickly, from what I see this directs people to see this book as one that looks into war and its consequences more than anything else. It is very good, I like were it started. One thing to consider, wouldn't Simsun be tired and/or sore from the work of the day. Consider that his is middle aged, just got back on the farm a few years ago, what time of year? Harvest, planting season, other actions of farming- rock picking, walking beans. Also a little bit about the table Simsum and his son had made. This may not be helpful, because you may not want to go a little more in depth on these things.

I like the text, it is really good. If you decide to open with this, you are setting the world in an interesting way whilst also sparking some curiosity in the reader. I was not sure ( due to the terms used ) if it was going to be fantasy or sci-fi but that confusion benefits the content, in my opinion. The way they speak suggests to me that they will also have a religious system. Was that in purpose? I would personally do a few little twicks, for instance, the sentence that ends with 'just weeping over his loss.', I would delete 'over his loss' en emphasise weeping as it feels redundant. I also have a hard time with the sonority of the main character's name but that might simply be because english is not my mother tongue. Overall, I can only say that I cannot wait to know what happens next. Great work Daniel.

I guess I would rank it a ~3,25 out of 5, in which 4 is a must read and 3 a read if it crosses your way.

Yes I liked it too. I'm even interested in how it's progressing from here, which is not that typically for me. You can be proud of that. I liked the world building with the hypothetical fight rankings.

I really enjoyed this! It captured my attention from the get-go. I think I disagree with the idea that an action-heavy start is a bad idea here. Books that start like this always really pull me in so that I'm invested enough by the time they do more work developing character/backstory/magic system/etc. I echo what's already been said about the prose being a little bit clunky in places, but I think that matters wayyyyy less at this stage than the overall idea/execution (which I thought was great). I'm just sad there isn't more to read :'D 8/10? 9/10? Idk, but kudos for creating an awesome story.

I would say if anything, don't start with this. It would be good meat in the middle but wouldn't grab my attention very well for a start of a book . Too much going on right away. Giving the main character so many different roles and history etc. Maybe tell us more about Simsuns relationship with his son.

Really loved this regardless of it being a first chapter or short story. Only little criticism I had, was that there didn't seem to be a distinct moment where Timut died. I wouldve liked a sentence along the lines of "Timut took his last breath". Same for Sylli. Also, maybe I'm dumb but I don't understand how Avi got knocked back through the wall if tha cannonball came from above and how Sylli died in that moment. Did Avi pull her into the cannonball? Apart from that amazing all around. Loved the action, the violence, the subversion. WIthout any other context, 8.5/10.

So, it was easier for me to leave specific comments on a google docs version so I copy pasted the text onto there. I hope that’s okay. Here’s the link to it. If you have any trouble seeing the comments or anything just let me know or I can send it to your email or something. https://docs.google.com/document/d/15OuB5K8iP7SAYtr0nDj4PRWHxHpJPwo6L2xI7VAkwDw/edit

Hey. Did this in MS Word because Patreon doesn’t let you go onto a new line lol. What I liked: • I was invested in Avi’s background. I wanna know more about her • Avi revealing she’s got Simsun’s kids was a great twist • I was intrigued about the magic systems and enjoyed seeing them being used • There were instances of really good prose, like: “The officer's voice hit the ear like silk over a knife” What I thought could have been done better: • The scenery could have been described more • Overall, I have no problem with the kids being killed off but personally I think it was a missed opportunity to maybe have had some sort of side quest with the kids (or at least one of them) • For the beginning of a book, it was quite action heavy. This is fine but it means the rest of the book should ideally meet the standard for action that’s been set. • I felt like Simsun didn’t really have any huge emotional reaction to his children dying This is a really solid start to your book and I can’t wait to read more of your stuff. Keep going at it and you’ll have something cool there.
