So Cynthia is a singer and has a musical theater background and her voice is just amazing, acting came later. She got her big break when she played Celie in the Broadway production of The Color Purple. Listening to that woman sing brings me to tears pretty often, honestly. This song is good and all but her vocals on emotional songs are just..next level chile lmao

I knew nothing about wicked prior to the movie coming out so I have no connection to defying gravity as far as growing up with it but there's something about Cynthia and Ariana singing it whether it be this performance or the movie it makes me tear up a bit😂. It's sad neither one of them one their Oscars, I definitely think they should have it would have been well deserved.

Dee, as you said, this performance holds a lot of weight and meaning for those of us who grew up watching the Wizard of OZ/The Wiz and have seen Wicked both on stage and on film. As you said, the songs themselves are very much musical theatre showtunes. The Disney song 'LET IT GO' was based o Defying Gravity. Idina Menzel sang both. So that's where the Disney feel comes from. Also really loved the way Ari looked at Cynthia.

dee i’ll provide some context for you lmaoo 😭 the first song was “somewhere over the rainbow” from the original wizard of oz. the second song was “home” from the wiz. essentially they were paying homage to the films that came before wicked. cynthia actually rose to fame in the theater community before this for playing celie in the color purple on broadway, where she won a tony, a grammy, and an emmy for that performance alone. there are actually performances of it on youtube its insane. if she would’ve won at the oscars, she would be an EGOT. she was actually a superstar in the broadway community before this, so the film has actually exposed her to a whole new audience. wicked itself is also a massively popular broadway play that has been playing for many years, well over 20 i believe, which is why so many people were geeked about the film. if you made it to the end of this then congratulations 😭

Musicals are usually hit or misses for me but I really enjoyed Wicked and I’m excited for part 2!! It’s definitely in my top 3 movies of 2024 along with the Substance with Demi and Smile 2 with Naomi. And the 2 songs they sang in the beginning were songs from the wizard of oz and the wiz.
