Hello! In this painting, if memory serves me right, I used Hard Light layers to add colors to the values. And I still often use Hard Light layers for that, but I also use Overlay layers. Overlay layers are great if the values below are exactly right, since Overlay won't change the values as dramatically as Hard Light can. And Hard Light layers are great if you want the colors you add to your values to also change the values in one direction or another. I haven't made a video explaining the process, but you can check out the time lapse videos and PSD files. There you'll notice the layers in my layer stack often alternate between Normal and Hard Light or Overlay layers. I'll use the Hard Light and Overlay layers to make adjustments to colors and values. I fill those layers with 50% grey and then pick a color that is close to 50% grey but has a tint to it to nudge the colors below in that direction. When you work with Hard Light or Overlay layers, or other blending modes that are in the same group, It's a pretty good rule of thumb to stick close to 50% grey and gradually move your color choice out from that point on the color selector to find the right one. And when painting onto the Hard Light or Overlay layers it helps a lot to set your color picker to pick only from that current layer so you can more easily pick and blend colors on just those layers. This is your best work yet. I'm fascinated to see all the thought you put into the details of form. I think it's good that you experiment even if you sometimes reach dead ends and have to back track. That may be why this painting is so successful. I'm very confident in my drawing skills but have a lot to learn from you about rendering. If you don't mind me asking, how long did this piece take you to do this, all in?
