To give an incredibly late response to your splendid reply... Graphics cards - My Vegas Pro lags quite often while editing. This is because it only utilises my CPU. I currently use an RTX 2070 Super, and I used to use a GTX 970 (both Geforce/Nvidia). Thank you kindly for the audio-editing feedback. Similarly, I have no idea about any very technical things like this. It's quite annoying for me when I just want to write something or record something, only to find that I have to twiddle with individual settings. But once you find the setting you want... that's just fantastic. I've mostly been doing a teeny bit of noise reduction on Audacity, and then using a preset on Vegas to make it sound right so far. I think these settings you've shared will be essential with any work I do, so again, many thanks. I've twiddled around with the audio on Audacity since your response, and I certainly need to twiddle with it some more. Although, it sounds good so far and I'm excited to figure it out in the end. Much love, Robot <3

As usual, I had such a great time watching the video, really making me glad I joined this lovely group here as well! You really got me to the point where I'm postponing watching your videos when I don't feel like I'm in the right spot to watch your videos and I hope this tells a bit of how much I appreciate your videos! Just today I got out of an incredibly stressful time in which I was so happy about every bit of compassion I would get along the way and watching your newest video made me realize how lucky we are having this engrained in our species! At at the same time, I was keeping myself going with the promise of getting back to my creative outlet eventually so I love your idea of the podcast episodes. Anyway, that's it for my overly encouraging hymn, I wish everyone an as great of a day as I'm having and all the endurance to live through turbulent phases, all storms gotta pass some day!

Ashley Naudé

Hey there :) I don't know if someone has mentioned this in another comment or not, but you should check out Midnight Gospel on Netflix! It's basically episodes of Duncan Trussell's podcasts that have been turned into animated episodes. It's how I first heard his podcasts :)

Ren Everheart

It's always wonderful being able to hear from you and see the content you create! I just watched the new video and your engaging speech and choice of words never fail to make my day better. Hope you're staying safe during these times, I cant wait to order the new book when its finished!

Tjark Döring

Hi, nice to hear from you. Good job on the new video. I'm looking forward to all the stuff coming. Cheers.

Shesha

Thanks! He's showing all the initiative at this point, which is wonderful. I didn't start playing music until my mid-teens, so I'm keen to include a lot more music in my kids' childhoods than I had haha

Shesha

Awesome! I'm super happy to be able to introduce you to her ^_^ Her youtube channel is called Patty Gurdy, and I was introduced to her myself through her song Gurdy's Green.

Oscar

Hi friend! Thank you for existing. Could you please set up an RSS feed for your podcast things so they can be listened to whatever platform one wishes to use?

MsSaltyGiggles

my comment was deleted? I hope not...I spent the last 40 minutes writing it...that would suck

Max Winga

Howdy! Congrats on making it another year into the future. I love your content and believe I've watched every one of your videos at this point. I just found your exturb2a channel and was wondering if you have any sheet music for your piano work. I really enjoy blueshift and would love to try learning it myself if you have the music. Also congrats on having two spots on the first short list of things that have brought me to tears, especially "The Rememberer", that was beautiful. "The Moon is a Door to Forever" was the other which really hit me, especially as I am going to school for physics and hope to one day launch off of this planet.

Brock Fritze

Follow up: watched the new video. Excellent job

Nici

Just cute.

I just watched your Catastrotivity video, it is fantastic as always. I've followed your journey for a while already and never regretted watching, listening to, or reading anything from you. You ring a bell in my soul I rarely hear or feel, and whenever you strike, the rust comes off and a clean sound fills me with energy. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart. I am actually not an artist in the strict sense but I'm a neuroscientist and science is a craft which demands the same set of rules you laid out so brilliantly. Right now I am in the process of creating real virtual magic, a virtual reality game which uses a brain computer interface to let you experience magic as though it were real. It is a project which realizes a dream I have had my entire life, and I finally have the technique to put it to life. I feel like you might enjoy the idea, so, in case you (or anyone else, for that matter!) read this, I'd be honored if you had a look at my teaser trailer here: https://youtu.be/DaAsFs0AOeo I'd love to have a conversation with you about where this could lead, you find my contact in the video description, and if you ever visit Berlin you will always find an open door at my home to test this game, or just hang out and have a drink or two.

Hey ex, my actual name is Sam, I'm new around here this month. I don't know if it's the norm, but I really appreciate the long message. Since I'm new here, here's the personal connection note. I found you through And Then We'll Be Okay. I was going through a real rough time due to a break up and that video gently destroyed any concept I had of the world, and I am entirely grateful for that. I then proceeded to tear through the rest of your videos, shedding the occasional tear and laughing at every video. And Nothing Can Ever Ruin This really hit different of course. I then found your books and Prince of Milk made me cry. I don’t know if you’re critical of that one or not, but it’s my favorite book I’ve read. Anyhow, thank you for your work, I appreciate it. Regarding current matters...I have never heard of the hurdy gurdy but now I love it...I can not wait for the new book. I’ve been holding off on Logic Beach and Lucy Dunne because I wanted to savor them. But now I have no excuse. I’m not sure of the difficulties in doing so, but any chance of printing them as paperbacks like the other two?If not I will gladly consume the pdfs...I’m american soooo ya the corona situation here is...well...not ideal as I’m sure you’re aware. I also recently bought one of your shirts and I must say, I can’t wait to wear it on a date once that stuff is possible again. Thank you for the feline picture. Cats are the best kind of psycho ninjas the world has ever made. PS. patreon is annoying how you can’t seem to start a new line without posting the comment...so this is my second go at this reply

Brock Fritze

Happy belated birthday mate, good to hear from you again. Enjoy the White Russians!

exurb1a

Hey Robot. Once again - it's always a joy to see your messages (and occasionally serendipitously bump into each other in comment sections.) That does INDEED sound like an omnivorous movie diet. To your comment about maturation, I must say that I thought one day I'd get to a point where I'd seen enough to know what my taste was. But no. You age and it changes, and you change with it. A very strange, malleable process. To the death comments, I won't pretend I don't have a fairly pronounced fear of it. On my side it's the fear of not existing ever again, rather than the physical aspect I think - but you're absolutely right, the root of it is in the constraints of the human body. So! Ohhh boy, with the audio stuff, it was quite a few years playing around to find a method I could stand. What I would recommend is (in this order): Equalisation, the compressor, then the limiter. I'm no audio engineer, and I bet anyone who knows anything about this stuff thinks I'm quite incompetent, but the limiter seems to be what you're asking about - it will cut down the peaks and stop the awful clipping quality. By using the equaliser, you can give your voice a more 'bassy' radio feel if that's what you're after. The compressor will make the sound 'fuller', or louder in a kind of pseudo way, and the limiter will make sure it doesn't sound like screaming. I'd recommend twiddling with each preset individually to see what works for you. Hmmmm, with the graphics card question, I'm not sure - is that when you go to render using the 'CUDA' option, or it just doesn't exist for you for some reason? Are you using a fairly modern graphics card? Again, always a pleasure to hear from you, apologies I can't give your message the response it deserves, but big love, hope you're doing great, and speak soon.

exurb1a

Hey there. I've been a fan of his comedy for a while but for some reason haven't checked out the series yet. Will prepare myself emotionally and dive into it tomorrow I think. Cheers!

exurb1a

Firstly to your covid note above, hope everything improves there of course. And I think if you can interest him in music (as you know), you'll be a very proud parent in a few years from now. I know so many people who wish they'd had the chance when they were younger. Best of luck to him (and you) on his musical adventures!

exurb1a

Hey there. Nooo, I don't know Patty, but if she's a hurdy gurdy player then consider me very interested. I'll bookmark her right away and check her stuff out later. Cheers for the heads up!

exurb1a

Hi Dari. So I've been down to the protests a few times, and I have to say everyone was very well-behaved on the protesting side, from what I saw. But it's quite a crazy time for the country for sure. Well thank you kindly, I will check out the album later this evening. And that's the second time someone's mentioned The Beginner's Guide now, I think. I'll get on it as soon as possible. Cheers for the support and all the best!

exurb1a

Well Shelby. Obviously a massive happy birthday first and foremost. May each song be more awkward than the last, and I hope it's a lovely day indeed. So, the feline went through a phase around when she was two of waking me up at about 4 in the morning for food. She did grow out of it eventually. (Now she wakes up at 3. ((Jokes))). I do hope your feline does too. That would be a nice birthday present. Big love, hope all's well in Canada, and cheers for the support! (And may I once again add - please imagine it in song form - a very, very awkward happy birthday.)

Sairagav .

Belated Happy Birthday exurb1a. May be live forever!

exurb1a

Hey there. Ahhh thank you! So I had considered releasing it in parts. The problem is doing that is exactly the reason there isn't a second Logic Beach. It provides a bit too much time to regret writing the thing and quit, and I'd prefer to just get this one out in its entirety. So, there are some stories from the fifth science that got left out. If you're interested I still have them, you'd be more than welcome to give them a read. Hope all's well in Ireland anyway, and cheers again for the support and being so lovely.

exurb1a

I will kindly request you postpone it indefinitely! And thank you ever so much, I will pass the kind wishes onto her directly. Cheers for being so lovely. And I do hope you were joking about the self-murder part. Much love.

Ryan Williamson

The emergency was nothing overly serious. My girlfriend simply needed to have a minor surgery, as her insurance is based in Poland as she is Polish. While we have been here, we managed to get in a (socially distant and masked up) visit to the Royal Castle in Warsaw and will be doing the same when visiting Krakow and Auschwitz.

exurb1a

Wellllll, I will say somewhere between the 10th and 8th of this month, right in the middle in fact. How close is that?

exurb1a

Ohhh, I'm super happy to hear that, do share it with us on here if you get a chance. Best wishes to you too, Franco.

exurb1a

I'm a big fan of him too - he's doing amazing work! (Also when it comes to online quizzes, have you ever played this? I got addicted for a few years. https://www.thewikigame.com/) Will check out Honkai Impact, and let you know, cheers!

exurb1a

Cheers Alex!

exurb1a

Hey, thanks Albert - big love to you too. And had a look at the Danish statistics; that is a much healthier curve than we have currently in Bulgaria. Hope all's well!

exurb1a

Hey Ryan. So, sorry first off to hear about the medical emergency - hope all's well there. If the nature of the visit was different, I'd love to recommend some points of interest to check out there. But very glad that Ireland's come out the other side anyway.

exurb1a

I would attempt to start a religion around her if I wasn't already a devoted follower

sashawp

Hello Ex, if you want to hear something that'll make that podcast all the much better, I've got it. His mother died only 3 weeks after recording that.

Miika Henttonen

Duncan Trussell just made an animated series called Mightnight Gospel. It's on Netflix. It's based on the conversations on his podcast and the animation is mind blowingly awesome. That convo with his dying mother is also a part of it (the last episode) and yeah, hard to hold in the tears if you have a heart.

Shesha

Oh, something I thought you might enjoy knowing: my son turned three about six weeks ago, and has been trying to play my violin when I leave it on my desk. So yesterday I got him a 1/16 violin of his own (the fraction is definitely not to do with length, so I'm guessing perhaps it's volume of the body). Anyway he's pretty happy about it and has even been trying to teach his sister (who just turned one) to bow ^_^

Shesha

Also, lovely to hear from you! We are dealing with a second wave of the virus where I'm from, but my family and I are doing well. I'm preparing to move though, so that could be interesting in this state.

Shesha

Dude, I love the hurdy gurdy! I spent my teen years pretty intensely fascinated with classical music so knew of it, but never really heard much until I came across Patty, who you are probably familiar with. Her music is pretty tame compared to Guilhem haha, but I love her style ^_^

Dari

Beautiful to hear from you, Ex. My Bulgarian friend says you guys are protesting, be careful out there. Bulgaria can be wild. Here's another recommendation. You know how there's music for the end of the world? Well, this album is for the beginning of the world: "Music for Nine Post Cards" by Hiroshi Yoshimura. A game similar to Gris (mostly in focus on story-telling) would be "The Beginner's Guide". It's about creativity.. I don't want to spoil the rest, it's not a game, it's a piece of art. Have a relaxing weekend :) Dari🐉

Shelby DeSousa

Hi Exurb1a, long to watcher new time patreon here, or whatever they say. The sun is just rising this side of Canada and things are looking good here in regards to covid. Well that is to mean if my government still bans the U.S. from coming over for the foreseeable future. I'm also quite optimistic about the oxford vaccine, even with some strange people calling me a sheep for thinking so. I have a cat as well, and oh do I wish I could say he sleeps as much as yours does. He's actually the reason as to why I'm awake so early. On a different note I suppose it's socially acceptable to tell a complete stranger on the internet that it's my birthday today; can't wait to have all the awkward happy birthday songs flung at me. Anyways, thank you for sharing some of the things that have interested you recently. It really is quite nice to see some things that intrigue a brilliant writer. Cheers.

RobotWobot

The space tortoise, in all his glory, hath returned. Happy to have you here once again, Ex! I never doubted for a second that you wouldn’t return. 😄 It’s always interesting to hear what other people do to stay productive during quarantine. The hurdy gurdy is certainly unique. Personally? Movies. My God, I’ve watched so many movies. Some of them have been boring (Teen Titans Go! To the Movies). Some of them have been long and winding (Gone with the Wind and the Bourne trilogy). Some have been hidden gems (Philomena and This Beautiful Fantastic). I realised I don’t like action movies that much, unless they are particularly good (Mission Impossible 3 and 5). I’m a bit of an odd one - I digest so many different forms of entertainment so I understand references and can say “I’ve seen that.” Whenever people talk about them. The one thing I know I can take away, is the moral and the meaning. It’s a bit like someone else has learned a lesson for you. Mind you, I’ve learned a lot since I matured, so it’s hard to find new things. But there’s oh so much more to discover that you don’t even know yet. That’s why I keep going. Also found this video that got super popular on Reddit and stuff called “I Built a REAL-LIFE Time Machine!” By Lucas Rizzotto. It sounds clickbaity, but oh my, it is an amazingly-crafted video. Reminded me a lot of how spectacular your videos are! I joined the Discord community too, and they’re all super nice. I want to slide this in here about death quickly. There was one point in my life where, every other week or so, I had a moment where I was absolutely terrified of death. It happened for a month or so, and then suddenly I wasn’t scared. It was strange. What comforts me, is that when you die, you don’t have any of your senses to understand what’s happening. The reason you fear death is because of a constraint of your human body. And frankly, I think half the things the body does is completely f**king dumb. Although I don’t want to die, I know I’m merely restricted by this mortal awful body I’m stuck with. But at least I can enjoy food. I guess that’s something. To be fair, (and this is a bit grim), I think life is the definition of hell. It’s 90 or so years where you will go through mostly pain, stuck in a body which is slowly deteriorating and absolutely set against wanting to end itself. The only thing we can look forward to, is periods of pleasure for ourselves, and the experiences we can gather and learn from to help others. I don’t know if any of this helped you, but it has helped me to think about it. (Not so much the hell bit, but I think it may be good to think about when you fear death) I’m just re-reading your post to see if I missed anything. Ooohhh! Mini-podcast episodes! My, my, I am excited! 😃 I mean, not to mention that entirely new book that you’ve been working on for a while, AND the video you’re working on. You have been a productive boi, haven’t ya? I’ve personally just been making things here and there. Not really finishing anything as I go. : / But if there’s one thing you respond to in this message, it’s this bit... I recently realised I’m having trouble recording decent audio and using editing software. I also use Vegas Pro and Audacity, but I am wondering - what sound settings do you change on Audacity to equalise it and prevent it from sounding absolutely awful? I realised I’ve been peaking quite a lot in my audio, which isn’t usual. How do you get away with any shouting you do? Do you use anything foamy in that room to help your audio? I personally found a foam sheet and keep it bent round the mic using a bit of string. It seems to make at least some difference. However, all (incredibly essential) bass-boosting etc is done with a preset compression and EQ within Vegas. But sometimes even this comes with a couple problems occasionally. In terms of Vegas - I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t use my graphics card to process anything - the option just isn’t there. How do you get around that problem? It’s my one major issue with the software (except for moving images and text - you have to move the screen around it. Wtf is up with that??) Anywhosies, this has certainly been a long one. I always feel a bit selfish when I realise I’ve basically written more than everyone else combined in these comment sections. I hope you guys don’t mind! 😅 Much love, joy and learning to ya. Continue being amazing - I’m sure it won’t be hard. 😉 Robot ❤️

Eoghan Hogan

Welcome back. Can’t wait for the new book glad to hear it’s coming along good! Interesting thought: would you consider releasing the parts you were going to put into the book but then didn’t once it’s released? Maybe that’s a stupid idea but I’d love to see stuff that didn’t make it into the fifth science or parts left out of logic beach. Anyway, glad you’re well, Ireland still feels like a shitshow in terms of Covid but life goes on I guess and we adapt.

Matthew Greene

That is very interesting. My womb-exit anniversary also happens to have been a few weeks ago. I feel compelled to ask when yours takes place for the purpose of comparing them and being momentarily amused by the coincidence if they happen to be the same date.

Sairagav .

A PODCAST AND A NEW BOOK!!!!! Looks like I'm going to have to postpone my self-murder event by a few week! I'm looking forward to your work soo much! Lots of love to you and your lovely cat! Also, the fact that you recommend some of your favourite stuff in the posts is a lovely touch! Thanks so much for making life a touch more tolerable.

FrancoB

The trip of creating something is quite intriguing as I found out myself, you've inspired me to start doing my own stuff and it can be quite sad but satisfying at the same time, happy to know you are doing well Ex, and good luck on our constant state of existencial crisis!

Okwss

Glad to hear from you. Also, I saw on yt "In conversation with Exurb1a" By mystiverse . That guy a legend and I can't wait (9hrs from now but it would be 2 am for me when it launches) I've never ridden a bicycle so can't really relate (gotta thank scoliosis for that). :/ . Well life for me rn is just online classes (wake up, listen, eat, do online quizzes, sleep & repeat). Also found this game Called Honkai Impact 3 its rather fun, I suggest u check it out if you're really bored. (Actually pretty fun & the character building is just so good~)

Alex Davis

i've missed you ex, glad you posted again :)

Albertosaurusrex

Denmark is doing splendid if we look at the rest of the world. There was actually quite a few (old) people that were complaining about some young people flying to Sunny Beach to party. Other than that, I'm doing well, except I miss you ex :(

Ryan Williamson

It is good to hear that all is well on your end. Ireland is slowly getting out of lockdown and I am in Poland at the moment to accompany my partner during a medical emergency and Poland seems to be dealing with the virus relatively fine.
