And thats just America, pro wrestling historian Phil Lions when he went into the rabbit hole of French wrestling found news paper articles of pro wrestling "troupes" from the early 1800s with basic "gimmicks" including a masked wrestler called L’Homme Masque in 1863, also in 1863 luchador Enrique Ugartechea is considered to be the start of Lucha Libre in Mexico.

.

Real competitive wrestling you see in the Olympics or college is called "amateur wrestling", which has different rulesets like freestyle and Greco-Roman. The amateur and professional names come from a real divide goes back to the early 1900s and before, when amateur sporting was seen as more prestigious, done by wealthy upper-class people who didn't need day jobs, while professionals wrestled for money and were segregated as a result (especially when they started beating the amateurs). This applied to pretty much all sports back then. Modern pro wrestling really took shape in the 1920s, when a group of promoters called the Gold Dust Trio blended fixed pro-wrestling matches with fake circus/carnival wrestling (that introduced flashy moves and strikes).

Low Ki was always famous for his stiff strikes. I love them both very much, but haven't seen this match before. Thanks SL Bacio.
