To my understanding the origins of Pro Wrestling were the traveling Carnivals of the late 1800’s early 1900’s. There would be these traveling tough men who would fight each other, and sometimes fight volunteers from the crowd. Eventually guys would start fixing the fights to add more drama. This then spun off into traveling wrestling shows, and local wrestling territories that had local TV slots. I don’t think he’s the first, but the person to popularize the modern wrestling character was Gorgeous George. I think this is a little later in his career but here’s an interesting George match. https://youtu.be/SMUcbiRbAa8?si=pvan1PzSk45wLGB5
