probably because its a japanese series and at the time this arc was written, it wasn't particular uncommon in japan for an adult to marry a teenager, so it wasn't portrayed as weird in the series. you notice a lot of relationships in anime with very strange age gaps due to this. For example in one of my personal favorite anime, Gurren Lagann, Kamina is around 19-23 if memory serves and Yoko was 14 at the time of Kamina's death

I'd like to point out that Alai Jr is canonically 26. He's trying to rizz up Baki's 17 year old girlfriend. Pretty suspicious if you ask me.
