This reminds me of a commentary about the movie "Vertigo" with Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak. It was by Edith Head, the costume designer, IIRC. The first time we see Novak's character, she is wearing light gray. The commentary was that she did that because a blond wearing gray was a tiring color combination. It was supposed to put the audience at unease about her. When we see Novak again, as the twin sister, if I remember the story correctly, she wears more colorful clothing.
