AStoryForOne

Professor Oak here is severaly overworked and busy. It's going to be mentioned next chapter and elaborated on, but Edmund wasn't even the only kid to see him that day about an interview for sponsorship. Oak saying the 7 to 8 months thing wasn't to get Edmund out the door, that was literally when he would have time to spend possibly days or weeks looking into the problem. And the problem itself wasn't life or death, so it wasn't particularly high on his list at the moment. And the MC revealing Gastly wouldn't have changed anything at that point. Even if he shows that he has a pokemon that likes him, the sponsorship was already botched. Oak woudln't put his name on a person who very clearly has all the pokemon on his ranch avoiding him so plainly. So at this point, why would Edmund take out Gastly for no other reason to show off that he gets along with Ghosts? Ghosts are seen in a very bad light by most of the world, and while Oak would probably not align with those ideas, the fact remains that Edmund isn't one ot just randomly show that off without a good reason. At the end of the day, showing Gastly off at that point does literally nothing because he was already given an offer to help, which sucked for him unfortunately, and the sponsorship was already dead because of how everything appeared.

The only real 'bad' thing that's happened to him so far was that he failed the 'interview' for sponsorship. Yeah, it sucks, but it is what it is, and now he has to figure things out on his own and make his own way. It's not all doom and gloom, he has a new plan with ideas that will be discussed next chapter.

I agree with the other comments, I also found it strange that he didn’t mention Gastly, or even try to call him out. I liked seeing Professor Oak portrayed in a more serious light; that’s not something you often see. Though I did feel there was a bit of a missing spark of curiosity. It’s nice that he’s not just being used as a narrative tool to solve everything right from the start, but I still think the scene as a whole didn’t quite land for me. I’m not sure what your plans are for the story, but here’s an idea: The professor finds the other Pokémon's reaction odd. The MC begins to explain. Oak states that he can’t support someone who’s actively hated by all their Pokémon. The MC pushes back, showing that not all of them dislike him, and directly asks for help to understand why. Oak maintains that he can’t act as a sponsor (for the reasons above), but offers to help anyway, despite being very busy at the moment. From here, you could take it in a few directions, maybe he summons a Ghost-type that didn’t appear earlier to test, or says he’ll reach out to Agatha (but she’s hard to reach and it might take a while). Another option could be him referring the MC to a specialist in a distant city, turning that into the MC’s first journey goal.

The more this story continues the more it feels mean spirited just for the sake of forcing Ed to only use ghost types and take away his support structure at the same time for drama making him backslide even further into old habits.
