Backyard Time Machine: The Time Travel Mystery of Mike “Mad Man” Marcum
🕑 Added 2023-11-08 23:07:05 +0000 UTCMike fired up the box and the lasers came to life.
The machine produced a small circular area of distortion. It was a vortex about eight inches across that looked like ripples above a fire.
This was unexpected.
Mike didn’t know what the vortex was or if it was dangerous. So he grabbed a sheet-metal screw and tossed it through the field.
It vanished.
Mike just stared and blinked and waited. The screw was just… gone.
So Mike powered down his machine and turned to head back into the house.
Then heard something clattering.
It was the screw. It rolled to a stop about two feet from the box.
Mike thought he invented some kind of teleportation device.
He didn’t.
Michael “Mad Man” Marcum invented a time machine.

I was rewatching an episode from about a year back and I noticed my account name scroll by. I wasn’t checking, but couldn’t miss it as it inched by slowly. Eventually, he’ll probably have to go to a split screen with names on both sides. I’m sure they wrote the lyrics and recorded the longer “outro” song as the current solution to more names. Good problem to have!

Yes. For example in topics covered about, say, alien abductions and being transported to far off worlds, those individuals who all claim to be one or the other don't have their stories lined up to be consistent. Some say very different things about themselves or about their experiences that don't add up logically. That doesn't take away from how much the story about them is enjoyable.

The first ever edition of Coast to Coast AM I listened to was April 18, 1995, the night of Arts first interview with Mike Marcum. It got me hooked listening to Art, and he kept me entertained until his passing in 2018. At the time, I was young and naive, so I called information (it was 1995) and got his home phone number. And called. I talked to Mike for a few minutes, and he was the same humble guy I had heard on the radio. I never called back, but was happy he returned two more times. Thanks for covering this topic, it brings back great memories.

I loved this story, and I remember the Coast to Coast Art Bell, I loved listening to the stories he got out of people. Us kids in high school in 1980 also love Art Bell. This story always made me cringe a little, just the idea of time travel. Up until I was 45, I was introduced to a kid just like Mike, a self learned electric child prodigy electrician. He collected computers and figured out how to piece them together to get a working computer at 12 years old, at 14 he was writing script, and manged to hack into >NASA< and was sending directional orders to one of the Mars Rover's. Yes, he was driving a rover on the moon, and didn't think it was real, but the FBI then busted in and took everything plugged into a socket, even the toaster. I was growing at the time, like your carp was, and we made an automated grow system for basement, but never sold it. That was prior to commercial growers took over and put much cheaper stuff out than we could, and busted our thing down before we could take off.

Great show, I remembered the Mad Man” Marcum story from years ago and on one of your earlier episodes you mentioned it and Art Bell. So I went and found the Art Bell show where he interviewed Mad Man and relived this great story and experience. To hear the story again, to hear Art again was just Fantastic.
