MrMegaPussyPlayer .

I just imagined the scene with goo. It cracked me up.

Framing Device

Typos I cried out in triumph. “Alright, let’s goo!” -> let’s go~!” (less correction and more style, but 'goo' is its own word, and it also was what I read that word as at first.) I haven’t been a [Guard], although my dad was one growing up. -> my dad was one when I was growing up.

Harry Hirsch

Selkie just has a nek for making me tear up in the last sentences of a chapter. And it's often so unexpected!

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter.

SwitchBlaze

Good Chappie. Thank you.

adr

I would like to know that too, but it might be hard to write an interlude around it that adds to the plot. I don't think the panic lasted very long, as I think the Sentinel reputation carries a lot of weight as being a force for justice and stability. Dude's blood pressure probably spiked for a minute there, but that's about it. Unless he's a corrupt official. Then he's probably in full on emergency damage control mode right now.

tr13ze

Thanks for the chapter 😁

Roombot

Talk with the Custodes?!?! FOR THE EMPEROR!!!!!

TroubleFait

Thankfully the dragon decided not to press charges, considering it fair for services rendered.

Roombot

I love these joyful dawn chapters. I honestly hope there are lots more to come before we get down to business.

TroubleFait

This captain of the guards sounds like an upstanding citizen.

Roombot

I wonder what kind of stories the people of Orthus tell about Elaine. The Witch, the Sentinel, the Librarian. The majority of the ones who knew her are probably dead by now. And apparently some of the residents worship her now?

Thomas Heaton

She’s gonna arrest so many adventurers

Ronny Cook

Her father was a Guard... and she was breaking and entering (into the library) even then. Elaine has a criminal history the length of which has few equals. Her Adventurer dalliance is just the latest brush against the law; she really doesn't have a good history as law-abiding citizen. Heck, she stole from a DRAGON.

znoW

She's not a rebel as in a rebel of the law, merely someone who hated Remus' culture, politics, laws and her own circumstance, basically the world order of that time period. She was never really a rebel, merely a modern person with thoughts and opinions of personal freedom and equality. Also, that law is probably only added to pad things out in this context. The point was that she broke many a law, that's it. Don't read so much into stuff that really is probably only a slip up of the author. Seperate Selkie and Elaine in your mind, the same for many other stories, and it will be much easier on yourself. Also, I do think she was self aware enough from the start to sort of know, but she also grew to understand her own biases more and only had it reinforced during the story. Don't act as if you're somehow above biases, we all have them and they are apart of us just like our favorite foods, styles and colors. I think it humanizes her in a way many stories fail to. Some people sterilize their own protagonists enough that they are only a reflection of the authors political views and opinons. I like that she has flaws, and I would rather she grow past them over time rather than not having them at all.

extantCadence

Really cool to see Elaine not even questioning a law against sleeping in public, an act which puts no one at risk but yourself, aka criminalizing homelessness. She was presented as thinking of herself as such a rebellious spirit back in Remus but it's never really gone beyond the petty and the personally relevent for her. Her rebellious nature has always run about as deep as a puddle. She's frustrating and arrogant, and it's somehow genuinely disappointing that she never seemed to realize how big an asshole she was to the adventurers from second 0.

TeaGeek

That is a good point - she did do guard duty as undercover legionnaire.

Nait02

I mean Mare Town is relatively new, especially considering Immortals are running it and even Mortals have longer lives thanks to Vitality. There probably hasn’t been that much time for corruption to creep in at least at the higher levels.

Lucy Severine

That's just frankly impossible. There'd have been no reason to put the necessary preservative spells etc on it to even let it SURVIVE that long given it wasn't being kept *for* something, and that's on top of it having to be randomly preserved through every immortal war's nuke-equivalents. And that's not getting into the statistical logistics of how it'd end up in Elaine's hands unless she hunted it down, which, as you pointed out, she would have no reason to know to do. It'd be like us using a stone-age bowl and 'not knowing' what we're using.

Khal Lee

Hahahaha Elaine, mother of modern medicine, and guard... of modern medicine? Make her guard a library!!!

Hauke Sattler

It would have been a nice touch if that bowl for the mangos would have been the original one. The one her parents used while they waited for her return. Maybe with an inscription "For Elaine" in creation. Elaine couldn't know it is the original one, because she was already guest of the fae when her parents started the tradition.

Jennifer Leigh

He's definitely going to regret it.

Framing Device

Possible Typo: “Alright. Talk with Custodus, let him know you’re a new recruit. Don’t make me regret this, on your father’s memory.” -> Talk with the Custodes Given that the name is presumably a position (like the quartermaster) rather than an actual name, the 'the' should be there. Elaine doesn’t use Katerina and Legata interchangably either. Unless of course Custodes IS the name and fate just conspired to put him into an official position in which his name and role can be used interchangably. Which… would be a funny parallel to Elaine, who is both Elaine (name) and Elaine (healer), so Custodes Custodes meeting Elaine Elaine would be funny.

Quantenmecha

Time for [Guardswoman] Bunny to hop around and confiscate every illicit material she can find with her senses :D The bane of all smugglers has arrived!

Simon Hoerder

How much corruption is she going to discover in the guards? With all her hero-worshipping, it feels like there's bound to come some disappointment her way.

Andrew

Thank you!

Dalth

I’d love to have a line into what the captain of the guards was thinking. Probably a lot of panic and exasperation.

Davis

AGAB

Mike G.

"Don’t make me regret this, on your father’s memory.” - the feels!! Thanks!

Tilen Praprotnik
