Chapter 21: The Accountant
"I hear you want to join the team?" Brosky asked me abruptly.
"I do."
"We’re not talking about stripping or fucking around here. Your next mission could be dangerous.”
As if I did not get it.
I was no fool.
“That’s fine. I just want to help Mr. Kravchenko. You know that I’m close with Artem.”
“You could be putting your own life at risk."

I had a bad feeling about Brosky from the moment I met him.
To be fair, the circumstances of Amelia Bryant's death and his reaction afterwards did not speak in his favor.
The man was vile, cruel, and he acted like such a puppet for Andriy that he was rather pathetic.
Artem had explained that "Uncle Brosky" was very close to the top of the organization and that he could almost be considered the head of H.R.
I had insisted on having a meeting with him to show my commitment to joining the organization.
After all, if I was going to be included in their exit plan, I had to be fully part of the team.
Therefore, I asked for a job.
Basically, Ferguson managed the people who worked in the clubs and various establishments around town, while Brosky managed the people involved in the shadier activities.
I hated them both equally.
And as luck would have it, my first assignment working for Andriy Kravchenko would force me to deal with each one of them.
My task? To launder money at the Rainbow Club.
Brosky would give me instructions, and Ferguson would periodically stop by the club to make sure I was following them.
To make a long story short, I was supposed to add bills in the cash register and lines in the Rainbow’s accounts so the Kravchenkos (including Artem) could justify having so much money.
I made it look like the customers had bought more drinks than they actually had, like they had put more money in my colleagues' thongs, and had paid an entry charge at the door when people could mostly get in and out of the club for free.
I added 10 to 20% of revenues each night.
The Rainbow was just one of the many ways they found to keep their business running under the radar.
Although, they all knew they were not so much under the radar anymore.
Between looking for moles and organizing the entire relocation of their activities between Mexico and Miami, the gangsters were staying busy.
As for me…
Well, I was trying to follow the motions, with a constant sick feeling in the pit of my stomach and my mind on high alert 24/7.
I almost snapped when Amber ran into me in the lobby.
The issue was not that she was annoying, but on the contrary, that she was absolutely charming and wanted for us to spend more together.
I could not stand her fake smile anymore.
“I feel like we haven’t had a drink in days, are you doing well? How is the love affair with the rich business guy going? I’m dying to know!”
She was cheeky and fun, putting a hand on my shoulder.
She said she missed our friendship.
One thing that she did not mention though was that she was spying on me for the account of our bosses.
Was she working directly for Peter or Tunegard? I did not know and I did not care.
I played my part since I absolutely wanted for the Police Department to think that I was still wrapped around their (sneaky) fingers.
Honestly, I did not give them many reasons to doubt me, I was being extra careful.
I was friendly with Amber and told her that we should definitely organize something.
More importantly, I kept on feeding the P.D. with precise information about Andriy’s next plans and people in his organization.
Besides, the cops did not really have a choice, their other agent was dead and they would not send Amber to seduce Andriy.
Hopefully, Tunegard was not stupid enough to make the same mistake twice.
To get intel, it was me or nothing.
I should also point out that I had no moral dilemma with betraying Andriy.
If I kept Artem away from all my reports, going so far as to present him as an innocent victim in the whole thing, I did not have the same consideration for his father.
It may be difficult to understand, and at times I had difficulty understanding my own feelings about the situation, but I think I was most angry with Andriy Kravchenko for what he had put, - and was putting -, his son through.
I could not bear to see Artem hurt or being humiliated.
I thought that with his father behind bars, maybe, just maybe, Artem could be happy.
No matter what he was capable of to follow his father's instructions and one day inherit his empire, I knew deep in my heart that my boyfriend was a good man.
I loved him, that was a fact I had finally come to accept.
Pretty huge for me who had never fallen in love before!
In fact, it was probably the only thing I knew for sure at the time.
For the rest, I was torn.
What Andriy had done to Amelia Bryant made me want to do everything I could to arrest him, while my loyalty (and love) for Artem made me seriously consider betraying the police for the first time.
I could turn. All it would take would be to give false information to the police and tell Andriy everything.
Although, I probably would not survive that conversation with the drug lord.
Peter did not mention it, but it was obvious that he personally still had doubts about my commitment to the mission and my loyalty.
It was no coincidence that Amber was more determined than ever to follow my every move and get inside my head. S

Peter was worried that I would possibly become a double agent. He had probably been since I had started dating Artem.
Would I cross that line?
I really did not know how far I could go and that thought alone was scary.
It was difficult not to be reeling all the time.
The only thing that kept me sane was the time I spent with Artem.
The man was like a miracle drug.

Besides, for the most part, it was cool to spend more time with the crew at the Rainbow.
Manuel, Javier and Colin were happy to have me there, even if it was not as a stripper.

“First of all, you look rather fancy yourself. But in any case, you’re working for Lamar, and then, for Ferguson, not for me.”
“I work for Lamar, Ferguson and then, for Artem Kravchenko, so basically, you’re the big boss’ trophy wife! We cannot be friends anymore.”
I could not believe that one.

“See. You don’t even own up to it.”
“To fucking what?”
I stood up.

I almost punched the guy but I collected myself.
There was no need to create more problems for myself.

See, the real issue occurred the following evening.

“About what?”

“What happened?” Lamar asked. “Why am I losing another one of my boys? One of my best!”
“Hey! I’m right here!” Manuel intervened, flexing his biceps.

At the exact same time, Ferguson’s office door opened and Matthew came out. Defeated.
“Well, I’m screwed.” He announced.
“Dude! I… I never wanted this.” I told him immediately.
“Man… I really need that job… Why would you do that to me?”
I clenched my fist.
Why did my life always have to get so complicated?
“I didn’t ask for you to be fired! I swear.”
“Whether you wanted it or not, I’m done. Ferguson told me I’d better get a job somewhere else but the Kravchenkos own all the clubs in town… I’m so fucked.”
The guys started comforting him.
They were hating me.
“Gimme a minute.” I spoke.
Matthew hugged the other guys and I walked inside Ferguson’s office.
“Why the hell is Juicy getting fired?” I barked, sounding more aggressive than I wanted to.
Ferguson puffed.
I had walked in uninvited. A serious offense.
I found out later that he would never forgive me for it.
“Artem’s orders. What are you doing here?”
“That’s not fair. Matthew’s been, literally, working his butt off for this club for years. He cannot be dismissed like that.”
Ferguson was visibly furious.
He frowned but contained himself.
“What do you want me to do about it, boy?”
“Just call Juicy back in and tell him that he can work tonight.”
Ferguson laughed.
He was obviously just mocking me.
“Of course, sir. Does it mean I’m your obedient employee, now? Should I do everything you tell me to do?”
“Cut it off, that’s not what it is about…”
“No, I’ll do it. Right now. I’ll do what you say… Wait… Just one thing. Remind me of how much you’re paying me?”
I rolled my eyes.
“I’m not paying you.”
I was controlling my nerves too. I did not add “asshole” at the end of this sentence.
“Oh… So, I’m just your slave? Working for free? Your sexual slave maybe? You seem to like playing with other men… I shouldn’t be surprised.”
“Come on, can we just have a serious talk?”
He put his heads behind his hands and continued his pathetic skit.
“What do I have to do now to please you, Master?”
Ferguson was too old, too ugly, too fat and too vile to play these kinds of games.
I ignored him and I walked out.
“Let me just call Artem.”
“Do that, little boy, do that!” Ferguson kept mocking me as I left.
Once I was outside the club, on the phone with my boyfriend, the issue was settled in less than a minute.
Artem told me that he had taken this decision for me and I told him that he better undo it if he did not want me sleep at my place, by myself, the following night.
The fear of being deprived from eating my asshole and tasting my dick got Artem to act swiftly.
Juicy was immediately reinstated.
The crisis was adverted.
That was fucking odd because it did demonstrate the influence that I had on Artem to everyone, but at the very least, nobody got fired.
From this point on though, there was no doubt Ferguson hated me with all his guts.
Fortunately for the both of us, and maybe following this very incident, I was quickly assigned to another task.
Brosky came to see me at the club on a Thursday night.
“Starting tomorrow, you’re joining the guys at Floresville.” He announced.
“Floresville? What am I going to do there?”
“The usual. You’ll follow the instructions and you won’t ask questions. The less you know, the better off you are.”
He handed me a piece of paper with an address.
“What should I be expecting though?”
“Have you ever worked as a mover?”
“Huh… No… I don’t think so.”
Brosky felt up my arms.
“Well, you seem big enough to move stuff around. This is what you should expect. Be at that address tomorrow at 8 a.m., sharp. Understood?”
“Yes. That’s clear.”
Thanks to my cop’s background, I knew how to follow orders without asking questions.
He fetched a brown envelop from his back pocket.
“And here you go, your payment for the last eight days working for us.”
I opened it in front of Brosky.
There were at least a dozen five-hundred dollars bills. That was a lot.
“Wow… Thank you.”
“Andriy Kravchenko is a generous man.” He stared at me intensely. “Never forget that, Smith.”
“I… I won’t.”

All throughout this book, I've tried to show how more and more, Ryan was putting himself in an impossible situation. Of course, this gets even more complicated now so close to the climax / end of the book!

Great chapter. Sadly Ryan seemed to alienate both the dancers and the club boss, which resulted in him leaving the club. He may have redeemed himself with the guys somewhat, but I still think there may be some distance. Who knows, maybe the new job will give him some additional evidence for the police. I am still unsure how Artem will react when he finds out that Ryan is responsible for his dad’s downfall. I don’t see paradise still happening between Ryan and Artem after that. Also, I think Ryan will be lost after this job is over. He can’t go back to regular cop work. He’s now gay. He liked dancing. Even the clubs may close, and that could be on him. You have really tied the story in knots Thomas.
