Chapter 10: A night at the Sorrow
Struggling to slide inside the sleeveless latex costume in the backstage of The Sorrow, I had never felt this slutty.

“Don’t worry, your main job will be to look pretty anyway. There are real bartenders here to take care of the clients. If you have to serve drinks, they’ll help you out making them. You can ask Charlie to help, he’s a nice guy.”
“Okay. I will.”
Ferguson looked down on me.
“Turn around, boy.”
I hated that I had to follow his stupid commands.
I did though, I had to for the mission.
“The back really suits you.” He said, slapping my ass.

“Do a good job, Ryan. If Mister Kravchenko is happy with you, this gig can open a lot of doors for you.”

Ferguson had no idea of how much I needed to infiltrate said doors.
The truth was, I had made progresses but I had not gathered much information since the undercover mission had started.
I thanked him for his advice and I finally got inside the bar.
The place was much smaller than the Rainbow Club and also much sketchier.
People were smoking while it was supposed to be forbidden in public places, there were a few deem lights in some areas around the bar while some spots remained almost entirely in the dark.
I considered that the Sorrow was an adequate name.
I was looking for Charlie for direction, feeling very self-conscious in my outlandish outfit while the rest of the bar was rather business or fancy clothes only.
At the Rainbow, being dressed like a slut fitted the vibe perfectly, but there, I felt like the (filthy) odd man out.
For a split second, I even wondered if this was not just a whole plan to humiliate me. Some sort of a cruel prank.
Rich men having a good laugh at the poor stripper coming in in a latex uniform, who thought he had really gotten an offer to work at this notorious establishment.
I joined Charlie behind the bar, and thank God, he did not seem surprised to see me like this, neither did he mock me.
Also, the guy looked rather normal.
In his thirties, short black hair with a blue strand on the left side, wearing a black tee shirt with a little tag pinned on his pec which said staff.
“Ryan, is that it?”
“Yes. It’s me.”
“I’m Charlie.” He shook my hand. “Feeling a bit nervous?”

“You could say that. It’s my first time here.”
“First of, I need to ask, are you a cop? You know you’re legally obligate to tell me if you are.”
That took me completely off guards.
How was he suspecting me already?

He burst out laughing.
“Chill! I was just joking because of your outfit, Mr. Policeman.”
“Oh, this… Yeah, I’m feeling a bit out of place. People look fancy here.”
“Don’t worry, our customers are also used to see all kind of excentric or exotic things in here. You’d have to do a whole lot to shock any client at the Sorrow.”
“Maybe… But I thought, I don’t know… I thought the atmosphere would be a little different. I’m used to the Rainbow Club, not to this. I’m kinda wondering what I’m doing here to be honest.”
“Things can heat up later in the night. It depends. Don’t worry, I’m sure they picked this outfit precisely because it doesn’t look so raunchy when you’re standing behind the bar. It’s the bottom which is sort of… out there.”
Again, I was very self-conscious about my ass being almost fully on display.
Charlie took a good look at it and I could not blame him.
“Yes, I suppose. Ferguson also told me I should stay behind the bar until Kravchenko arrives and… Basically, until he asks me to do anything else.”
“It’s pretty typical. Like, I don’t think they expect from you to hold the bar. I’m used to the surprising and, let’s say, decorative guests standing next to me. You’re cool.”
I was decoration, how nice…
I looked around.
“This is definitely an uncommon place.”
“That’s for sure, but relax, you’ll get paid a lot just by just being here and looking sexy.”
He had a point there.
It was 9 PM and at this hour, there were no more than twenty clients in the bar.
Looking at them closely, I noticed other exotic things, as Charlie would have said.
Namely, there was a women wearing a latex outfit not too different than mine standing in a corner. All red.
She was mostly in the dark and this is why I had not caught her at first glance, standing in the shadow of five men playing a game of cards, probably poker.
The vibe was certainly strange. People were whispering more than they were talking, there was no much smiling or banter, the prices for the drinks were unbelievably high… It took me a while to feel okay there.
After an hour though, I was more bored than anything else.
I did not mind the sleazy atmosphere, if anything, I enjoyed feeling like I was in an old-school gangster movie, but there was not much to do.
Charlie could handle the bar by himself and the customers seemed to be familiar with him. They barely acknowledged me.
Who cared about the weirdo in the scandalous cop costume?
At some point, the woman in the red latex suit sat on the laps of one of the guys playing poker. A beefy 40 years old daddy with a long beard. He was licking her neck and feeling up her boobs, right there.

As time slowly went by, I was trying to collect and remember as much information as possible.
Who were these people? What were they talking about? Was there money exchanged or any deal made?
Anything could have been useful for the mission but I was not succeeding in getting much intel.
I was too overwhelmed.
Obviously, my focus was greater when eventually, at around 11PM, Artem Kravchenko and a much older man, - easily in his seventies, maybe early eighties -, walked inside the bar.
Kravchenko glanced at me, very briefly, but he went to sit at a reserved table without acknowledging me nor Charlie.
What did I expect?
He was, as per usual, wearing a beige suit.
With his almost white hair, the pale expensive suits were completing his identity.
A few customers nodded at him or shook his hand, as well as the decrepit hand of his guest whom I had no idea who he was.
I knew better than to ask unsolicited questions though.
As Ferguson had mentioned, the Sorrow’s clientele was appreciating discretion above all else.
The old man was not walking with a cane but he was not very steady either, like he could have slipped and fallen at any given moment.
It seemed like he could also drop dead any time.
“Hey, newbie, maybe you should go there and ask them if they need anything. You can take an order for two people, right?” Charlie told me.
“Yes, I suppose. What should I do if they ask questions though?”
“You smile politely and you look damn hot. Show them that juicy ass of yours or pull out your cock if you don’t know what to do, that should distract them enough!”

I hated it but he was right.
“Okay.”
“Just go, I’m pretty sure you’re only here to put oldie in a good mood there. You’re likely a special present Artem got him for their meeting.”

I noticed that Charlie was on a first name basis with Kravchenko which surprised me a little but I did not make any comment.
I walked to their table.

I brought the drinks a couple minutes later and only Kravchenko said thank you.
This time around, the older man did not even look at me. He was scrolling on his phone and I did get to see that he was adding redlines on some sort of a contract.
Obviously, I could not take too much risks and I made sure not to stare at the phone for too long.
In the end, Charlie had been right and I was literally paid for doing nothing most of the night.
I helped him serving some beers just because I did not know what to do with myself.
There was some jazz playing in the background, but after midnight, I felt like it was always the same song playing over and over again.
I was wrong but my ears were not used to this type of music.
The bar got gradually emptier until the group of five guys and the lady in red left altogether, - probably to move on to a proper gangbang -, and only Artem Kravchenko and his guest were there.
At no point, they had paid for their drinks and now, they were just staying for as long as they pleased.

“Isn’t there a closing time?”
“Not when Artem is here. It’s his place, he can stay 24/7 if he likes.”
“Yeah… Okay, I think I’ll be fine.”
“Thanks Ryan, it was nice to meet you and to work with you tonight.”
Charlie gave a last glance at my exposed butt and he left.
For the first time, I wondered if he was gay himself. Not that he would matter. If anything, the last weeks had made me much more open-minded.
I stayed there, trying not to look while still looking at the two men discussing and drinking.
It was past 3:30 AM and I was almost falling asleep.
I thought the undercover mission and that particular night would be more exciting. I missed the Rainbow and twerking my bare ass to an audience.
Finally, right before 4 AM, the two men stood up, hugged, and they left the bar together.
“Good night, gentlemen.” I spoke.
The old man mumbled something I did not understand but Artem did reply to me.
“Good night, Ryan.”
I had learnt nothing of interest and I was not too sure I had advanced in any way in the mission.
I was bummed and I felt silly, sweating in my outfit.
I could not wait to get out of it. Latex can be fun but right there, I was just tired.
I was walking towards the staff area to get Charlie and call it a night when I heard the entrance door opening again behind me.
I jumped as I did not expect it.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.” Artem Kravchenko apologized.
He had come back.
For what?

“That’s fine. I… I was about to get Charlie to close the bar but if you want one last drink, you’re more than welcomed.”
“I just wanted to thank you for your work tonight. I know I’ve made you stay late and it must have been pretty dull staying behind that bar with nothing to do.”
“It was fine.” I lied.
“Good. You’ll be paid the extra hours.”
I thought I had to say something, the right thing to finally break into him.
“Thank you, Sir. Has the evening gone the way you were hoping for?”
“Sort of. I wished I had gotten rid of that old brick sooner though.” He smiled.
It was strange to see Artem Kravchenko getting out of his character to say something a bit more sincere.
Or at the very least, something I was interpreting as sincere.
“The old brick seems to like you.”
“He certainly does.”
“You’re sure you don’t want another scotch?”
He bit his lips.

Artem sat on a stool at the bar and I joined him.

“You don’t care about living a long life?” I asked as he dragged on his cigar.
“I don’t think that’s really an option for me anyway.”
“What do you mean?”
“Let’s just say that I have too many enemies to live a long and happy life. In the meantime, I’m just trying to enjoy it as best as I can.”
“That was what you were doing tonight, enjoying it?”
He looked at the ceiling.
“Tonight was about work. I have some duties and I do my best to honor them.”
He had drunk a lot of alcohol all throughout the night but he did not seem inebriated.
“You seem like you do have a lot of duties to perform.”
I did not have to fake empathizing with him. I truly was.
“You know what Spiderman says? With great powers comes great responsibilities.” He chuckled.
“And you do have a lot of power.”
“You do too. Beauty is probably the highest form of power.”
I was flustered.
“You’re much more handsome and charismatic than I ever will be.”
Once again, I was genuine there.
For me, Artem Kravchenko was standing out compared to anyone and especially compared to me.
“Are you flirting with me?” He asked.
“I don’t know. Maybe.”
He took my hand.
My heart skipped a bit.
I wondered, and if, contrary to what Charlie had said, I was not a present for his client, but a present for him to enjoy personally?
“I wish I could invite you home, Ryan.”
“What is preventing you to do so?”
Crazily enough, I would have happily said yes to such invitation.
Slowly, I was realizing that handling the weird way Artem Kravchenko was making me feel would turn out to be the hardest part of my mission.
I did not recognize myself when I was with him.
There was this odd and unfamiliar chemistry.
“The fact that you would accept. You would have to, to keep your job, to maybe even get better gigs, or simply, because you would feel like this is an offer you cannot refuse.”
“Couldn’t I accept an invitation just because I want to? Because I like you?”
He smiled.
We were still holding hands. It was my first time doing this with another man.
“You’re a straight man. I know it. And that’s certainly my biggest flaw in life. Why do I consistently have to be attracted to the straight boys?”
“I thought sexuality and attraction were all a spectrum. At the very least, I believe that.”
“Maybe…”
“And who says I would accept the invitation anyway? I’m not an easy guy.” I winked at him.
His smile grew larger now, it was definitely more genuine.
“You’re smarter than I thought, then.”
“What if I was the one inviting you to dinner?” I asked.
“A date?”
“We could go as friends.”
I correctly assumed that a man like Artem Kravchenko did not have many friends.
“Why not? But I’ll have to be the one sending the invite. I’m thankful for your work and your… your presence.”
“Okay then, that’s a deal.”
I could barely hold his gaze.

“For now, I think I’ll just go back to the loft by myself.”

I used his first name. Another step.
He left me behind and once again, he had not tried anything.
Artem Kravchenko turned out to be a gentleman through and through, and I turned out to be much more into this flirtatious game than what I could have ever imagined.

I love the story and it could go in so many different directions. I’m going to guess that Ryan and Artem get closer, much closer. Ryan was open to it, so we’re seeing Ryan become bi or gay before our eyes. Not so sure Artem is the devil here. He may be being forced to do what he’s doing. Only Thomas know for sure

I'm not only an ass-bandit, but also a romantic guy, so I wouldn't mind if the romance between Girthy Ry and Artem deepened. I could even imagine that Artem isn't who we thought he was. Of course, I really like this story, but I still think that maybe the basic mood would be darker if it hadn't been for that conflict with the service provider a few weeks ago. Because of this, I feel a little like I'm only seeing one side of Thomas's writing talent. I'm completely satisfied with it, but I also think a lot about the other side, which was represented by stories like Wrestling Team Gone Wild, The Cure, From Homophobe to Homo and The Bully. I hug you even if you don't know me, Thomas, you've been bringing me great joy with your stories for weeks.
