Why is 0.15 different?
🕑 Added 2020-10-07 13:04:30 +0000 UTCOkay, like I announced in the latest progress update I wanted to inform you guys what happens with 0.15 and why it is different.
Since My New Family is now over one year old the game has become very very big. I know that 3 gigabyte for some people is not that big, but for others it's a huge file that they can't easily download all the time. This was the main reason to use 0.15 as a new season.
What this means is pretty simple: 0.15 will only contain content from that update ( chapter 10 ). So if you want to play Chapter 1 to 9 you have to download and play 0.14 ( I will keep links for 0.14 up all the time ). You can't start a new game with 0.15, you will get a error message and you can only play 0.15 if you made a savegame at the correct point at the end of 0.14 ( during the endscreen ).
So if you want to watch old gallery scenes or just replay Chapter 1 to 9 then you have to play 0.14. But don't worry, I won't do this for every update from now on. Every update after 0.15 will contain chapter 10 and all following chapters again. Just if the game gets too big again I have to do this again. But that is stuff for the future.
Now let me answer some of the more common questions I got lately:
Q: What happens with all the decisions I made from Chapter 1 to 10?
A: Every decision you made will carry over as long as you load the correct savegame. This means that you don't have to ask any questions in the beginning, you will just continue right away where you left off.
Q: I have several savegames with different paths ( Tanja for example ). What about those savegames?
A: The same thing that I explained above. If you want to continue this path just load the savegame that you made at the end of 0.14 that contained these decisions. It works the same way with all decisions you made. Everything will carry over just as you left it in 0.14.
Q: I'm playing the game on Android. Will my savegames also work? And can I have 0.14 and 0.15 installed at the same time?
A: I still have to test this but it should work the same way. Your savegames should be secure as long as you uninstall 0.14 before you install 0.15. Don't try to install it while 0.14 is still on your phone.
Regarding the other question: No, that is sadly not possible. If you want to play Chapter 1 to 9 you have to remove 0.15 and install 0.14 again. As long as you don't overwrite your old savefile you should be good. I will test this further once the first beta for 0.15 is ready for patrons. I might have to disable the "autoreload function for that though. We'll see.
If you have any more questions post them in the comments and I'll make sure to answer them as soon as possible. I hope this post explained it a bit better. Once I have the first beta ready for Sandra patrons they will test this with me. If everything works, good, if it doesn't then I will just drop the second season thing and continue like usual. I still have everything secured that needs to be secured. This is just a test, more or less. I will keep you guys posted. Keep an eye out on the patreon feed for the next progress update!

Who said it will be for every version? 0.14 will be Chapter 1-9 and 0.15 will be Chapter 10 to whatever chapter I am once I reach 3GB again ^^.

This is all just my opinion but think about the big picture: Wouldn't you want to give your users only one download link for the game instead of multiple ones for each split version like 0.14 and 0.15? Let me know if you want any help. I'll be more than happy to provide this if possible!

They use a very modified version of Ren'py though ^^ I will look into it but it's probably not worth the hassle if everything goes smooth with 0.15

I'm no expert on Ren'Py but I assume that only happens when you rename existing variables. Doki Doki Literature Club! has had updates too and they didn't make you redownload everything. Edit: Just my two cents but or migh be with to test this out. VCS like GitHub don't cost anything to easily keep track of changed variable names.

That usually can cause a lot of issues with saved variables etc. Ren'Py doesn't really like it when you overwrite/replace files.

@Killer7 How about keeping track of the changed/new files between updates and make a download of that? I've seen others use this method to keep the download size between updates low plus you don't have to worry about save game incompatibility issues.

I am keeping my issue of .01 but have to delete a few middle downloads every so often. Def want a full game at the end.

As an android user this sounds good. Already I have to remove most or all other vn in order to install MNF.

I understand the reasoning behind this plan and it is a great idea, however at some point at the completion of the game will there be a complete game download?

Smart move indeed. But what if you let the game size grow and make a Torrent Seedbox so you can focus on other thing than splitting the updates? This solution could be cheap and simple. I can even host the seedbox if you want.

Thats what you should do with all versions usually. Overwriting files with renpy is not that good.

Hmmm...Sounds like a good idea in theory, and will be interesting to see how it pans out in practice! I have seen it work in other games, so I don't see how it might not work, but I will keep an eye out for word on it here, and see what I hear from one of my friends who is also a Sandra Patreon!
