According to a book of the history of vampires that I’m reading, the stake is to pin the vampire to the grave so they can’t escape. To really kill them you need to behead them and then burn them. Also, according to the book, the first vampires originally looked like bloated corpses. If you dig up a grave and the corpse is bloated (because it’s full of blood) it’s a vampire, if it’s decomposed it’s a human.
