The embryonic development bit was NEARLY right, but in my opinion early embryos don't really "start as female", they start with primordial structures for both male and female adult structures. Then (typically, for non intersex embryos) the gonads become either testes or ovaries, and hormones cause the primordial structures to go one way or another. I say "in my opinion" because the definition of "female" is subjective, if you define female as "doesn't have a penis" then yeah a human embryo is female, but that's not a very good definition, a human embryo is really neither sex or maybe both.
