That scene between Professor Walsh and Giles early in the episode is very well written, because I think both of them are correct in their assessments of Buffy's development, even though they have opposite opinions. Buffy *does* have issues stemming from her absent father, and while Giles is her primary paternal figure and male role model, that abandonment still affects her. She *has* taken on adult roles too early, but Giles knows there is no choice in that and allowing her to grow independently is the best thing for her in her situation and facilitates her survival. Walsh is coming at this from the perspective of a scientist/psychologist, while Giles is the one actually responsible for guiding her development.

Sometimes I write extra dialog for a scene. When Buffy and Riley were discussing her accomplishments, it would have been cool if Riley had said, "You've killed more demons than you can count. You killed that giant snake. And that OTHER giant snake. And also that OTHER giant snake... "
