The whole scene when they were talking about why they're in detention was improvised which I think makes it even better

it may not have been physical abuse but def emotional abuse. Brians I think you saw it worst in some ways because his parents had to know about the gun at that point and what it's intent was and the mother just didn't seem to care at all. Like a normal parent would be ragging on you even about the gun itself while even that is unhelpful but she didn't even bring that up. she was just intense. I think that was done on purpose as well from the vast difference of the ideal family bender portayed of brians family. I actually thought it was funny when Claire said the nerds looked up to them because i remember hanging out with the nerds and we talked shit about them as much as they talked shit about us. We did not envy the popular crowd despite how many movies may depict it. It's amazing how great dialogue makes a movie of just a few people in a single location.
