A very important episode for Gabrielle. Even though I would say her individual development starts from episode 3, this episode is a huge part of why she becomes what she does. I know it’s only early world-building but I always found it odd that Melosa would regard Xena as a hero given her past with the Amazon nation.

Loved that Gabrielle gets the Amazon Princess mantle and starts her warrior training not because she wanted it or changed who she is, but because Terreis genuinely got who she is and liked her. Her being willing to give her life for others and shielding Terreis from the arrows with her own body is very in line with what we've seen from her before. Like how she instantly forgave Xena for hitting her in The Reckoning and risked herself by coming back to help even without Xena asking her to.

I love this episode. One of my favorites… and so crucial in Gabby’s story. She really does start to come in to her own here. And yes, the Queen of the Amazon title/duties do go back to Melosa at the end, but Gabrielle is still an Amazon Princess and rightful heir.

Gabrielle’s so much fun in this episode. “Hey, she puts up with me fine!” The Amazons and Centaurs show up on Xena for the first time and they make for memorable moments, including the Amazon dance tune, a surefire club hit.

One of the season 1 episodes I was very excited for you to see! The distrust between the Amazons and Centaurs and actual villain is such a classic Xena story, and a great introduction of both groups too. We love to see Gabrielle getting that development too; and how about her fight scene! Even little things like the choice to have Melosa using those choe boes (sp?) as her weapon at the beginning and again during the final battle to show that she favoured that weapon and Xena picking it for their face-off showed her a lot of goodwill, which she respected.
