I think there's something to be said about the economic systems in place which demand that people justify their existence with labor. In a world like that, where in order to sustain their own health, safety, comfort, education, or literally any other aspect of their existence, people have to work, and spend time apart from their families, I think it's natural that it would become difficult to divide consumerism and labor from love and commitment to family. I'm not saying the movie is about that, I think it really clearly isn't, but I think that's a reasonable underlying cause of the conflicting ideas trying, and failing, to harmonize? I mean, not to make everything about capitalist hegemony or anything.

This is the type of film analysis I really dig. Not some objective attempt to analyze the genius of an auteur (though those can be cool) but, a unique and more personal look at a weird, goofy movie by a charming, goofy guy.
