In the original show, Ozai was an abusive narcissist who only cared about power. In NATLA, they still want him to do the abusive things he does, but they want his character to be more "complex" and his actions more "understandable". Sometimes that makes sense for a show to do, make their villains more complex, understand how they justify their actions to themselves. But the problem is that's not how the original show wrote that character, and that changes how he interacts with the other characters. It feels like the writers only thought about "let's change Ozai in this way", but didn't change Zuko or Iroh's stories or arcs to fit that. The show is worse for it.

I feel like they’re trying to turn Ozai into Darth Vader in this show, like there’s this sense that Ozai is trying to express love in this bizarre way to Zuko and Azula by making them stronger through adversity, whereas in the original it’s so clear from the get go that he just couldn’t give a shit about either of them. It might make the show more interesting and dramatic to make Ozai more complex this way, but idk I liked how Zuko’s story is about accepting something he’s always known to be true on a gut level, that his father is not capable of feeling love for him, rather than learning how the way his father shows love for him is misguided.

I haven’t seen original atla in a while but apologizing for stealing the notebook of a guy who was trying to kill him sounds like a thing ang would do, but like, as a small punch line in a lighthearted moment. This show just doesn’t have lighthearted moments and ang is a joyless creature so it drags it into the realm of serious drama and makes him seem like a little freak

Personally the Agni Kai angered me a lot when I heard about it for the first time, it seems so wrong to me. A part that throws me off too is how empty the background is, like no one is watching this?? Its less of a public display of humiliation then too, and I imagine they just didnt wanna hire more actors

There is one objectively great change this show makes. In the original, they do a bit where Iroh keeps trying to flirt with June even though she clearly isn't into it. Rather than remove this aspect, they just made june a freak old man fucker who genuinely really wants to fuck iroh. 100/10, no notes.
