I feel like if Marla wasn't real, that would undermine the impact of the Tyler twist. Some of the biggest clues about Tyler come from how she interacts with him. But if she's just a figment of Jack's imagination interacting with another figment of his imagination, that goes out the window. It would also deviate from the "rules" for how Jack'e imagination works. Whenever Tyler is interacting with a real person, he's controlling Jack's body while Jack is imagining himself as a passive observer. But at the end of the movie we see the space monkies bringing a captured Marla to the hideout while Jack is sitting in a chair. How would that interaction make sense? (Also there might be similar situations in the support group scenes but I don't remember clearly enough)

This is dumb as hell but when you said that spiel about targeted ads not being accurate, I could have cried with the sense of relief and validation. Seeing these "you may have hepatitis", "free liver scan", "weight loss" etc types of ads often send me into a paranoid depressive spiral about my health. I worry they detect subtle patterns in my internet behavior that correlate with disease when in reality causing an emotional reaction was their whole goal.
