My mum was pregnant with my (older) brother when Lennon was shot. She has repeatedly shared the story of having the radio on and hearing the announcement of his death, and how she just froze and went numb...and my brother, who was super active at the time, went totally still and didn't move for two days. I've always thought of this as her way of explaining the deep grief she felt at his loss, and trying to convey how intense his death was. Anyway...super keen to see what you put out. This is gonna be so fascinating!

I’m actually really surprised by how hype I am about this! I’m not a Beatles fan by any means, I’ve probably heard like a tenth of their back catalogue and I’ve never really understood why they’re SUCH a big deal. But I’ve been thinking about this teaser and this video since this came out, and I’m really looking forward to the full video!

I saw the thumbnail and was like “oh, I don’t actually know much about this!” I’m just young enough to have seen a lot of the media that alludes to Yoko Ono and her “crimes” and I knew John Lennon was shot. And that’s it. It hit me how clearly I received, as a *child*, the message about Yoko despite literally never once feeling inclined to ask.

The amount of infidelity, money squabbles, and just plain celebrity insanity in the Beatles totally shocked me. Most bands break up. Yoko made some conceptual art and is unjustly the most infamous Japanese woman in history for 'ending' the beatles.

A surprising topic but one I’m truly looking forward to. I do think revaluations can sometimes overcorrect the enormous wave of misogyny and racism Yoko was subjected to by flattening an incredible but flawed person. That said, it’s bonkers how she’s scapegoated as the person who broke up the Beatles when Alan Klein is right there. Or, even more accurately, the actual grown-ass Beatles? Or the inevitable passage of time?

Part of what pushed me to make this was realizing how little pushback there is about the narrative that Yoko broke up the group, that nobody calls out the inherent misogyny and racism when NONE of the ex-Beatles, even at the height of their acrimony against each other in the early 1970s, blamed her. Especially because… we know why the group broke up. There was a big ol lawsuit to break the group up. It’s all a part of the public record and everything.

I'm so excited for this I remember even as a kid the expression of "yoko broke up the group" always irked me even though I was not a Beatles fan, and it's like side note wow how persistent the misogyny (also probably anti-asian racism) that to a young black kid in the 90s growing up from Detroit who knows of the Beatles purely cuz of osmosis and the most recognizable thing I knew was the phrase "yoko broke up the group."...yeah I'm gonna be seated with snacks when this drops.
