NEW VIDEO (Early Access) - Sacrificial Trash

This new video is coming out early for patrons, mainly because I finished it and thought I might as well make it available for y'all before it goes up officially tomorrow :) In this one, I wanted to sort of examine the way "innocuous" backlashes against certain media end up being used as smokescreens for socially acceptable bigotry and further radicalization. That's a bit of a tough concept to put into a title or thumbnail lol, but I hope you get a sense of what I'm talking about and that you enjoy the video.
As a sidenote, I mentioned this a couple of times in a few posts over the past few months, but I've gotten some new patrons and it's been a little bit so I thought it might bear repeating- I'm doing another video for October, and after that, I'm planning on taking a few months off. Burnout has been pretty rough for me over the past couple of months, and it's also this realization that I have literally always been either in school or working since being 5 without any time off save for summer vacation, and I would really like to take a little bit of time for myself to rejuvenate a bit and figure things out. I'm still planning on doing monthly patron videos during that time, since I still want to provide a service to anyone who is comfortable sticking around during that time, but the plan is to take probably 3 months off from making monthly videos. If anyone wants to cancel or pause their subscription during that time, I completely understand, though I am of course grateful for any support as well! Either way, thank you so much for your support and I hope you enjoy Sacrificial Trash!

This video was great, probably the best I've seen addressing this topic. Became a patron after watching it and just really appreciate the level of thought and care you and Emily put into all your work.

This was a good video, and really spoke to the issues I've had trying to assess Ghostbusters 2016 publicly; last I spoke about it online, I felt I had to preface any critique with "None of my issues would be solved if they replaced the leads with the cast of Horrible Bosses" because I didn't want to get lumped in with anyone throwing around "woke" and "political" like we don't know what they really mean. Also, I can only speak for myself, but I like the thought that being a Patreon subscriber actually helps enable you to take some time to recharge, refresh, whatever you need to do without having to churn out content to pay bills.

This is a really good point and it's something I think about all the time. Most people's earliest works are shitty or mediocre at best. Even highly skilled and successful creatives. If you get crushed by pressure or screamed off the stage for mediocrity to the point where you can't make anything else, how do you get good?

The frustrating thing about the orchestrated backlash thing is that the people who fall for it the most are children and young teens. There are adults who jump on board because they understand the neocon dogwhistles at play, and those people are going to be assholes no matter what. But younger people, in the 9-13 range, are more prone to not questioning this kind of tactic and falling for it completely. I do think today's kiddos develop a sense of media awareness much more quickly than older generations did, but I still see a ton of comments from people who appear to be very young kids that are really troubling. I've even seen some people who turned 16 or 17 commenting apologies on the videos of trans YTer I watch for having harassed him when they were 11/12ish years old, because an older YTer was leading them into brigades against him for 'fun.' The internet is a creepy place.

I think the very concept of "mediocrity" is vitally important but always gets ignored and it's hurting creators and audience members alike. I'm sure all of us has experienced a piece of media that is either average, below average, or just mildly disappointing but by the time we move on to the next one we have mostly forgot about it. By labeling all media as simply good or bad, we do nothing but give creators a huge amount of pressure to be perfect rather than allowing them to learn from their mistakes. The end result of this is often burned-out creators being judged for any flaw, real or imagined.

Glad you're going to be taking a well deserved break. I always like hearing from content creators that they've decided to take a break - I think it helps normalize rest and encourages newer content creators to prioritize their own well being over the grind. It's inspiring from an audience perspective too. I'm thinking about taking December off of work - never taken a whole month off from school or work before. Hope you have a wonderful fall season! 🍂
