The road to the cutout bins is paved with quickie cash in follow up albums. Fore was to sports what I’m in you was to frampton comes alive. That good time-y sound was marketable to the just say no crowd but then they had reaganomics to go with it. One album like sports was more than enough. Hip to be square was pushing it

The only huey song I've heard that really clicks for me is "Workin' for a Livin'". The fact that it hasn't aged into a radio mainstay like his love songs adds to the appeal, because it lets you see an artist as accessible as Huey in the light of something grittier, New Wave-ier, and a little more self-aware. Selling souls, rock and roll, any other game; sometimes you care about your music and sometimes you really are just cranking out songs at the hit factory. I was also pretty surprised that Todd did not mention Huey's upbringing here, as a well-traveled guy who was raised in California to hippie parents. I hear the song a little bit as defiant mocking against nonconformism, in the same way the counterculture was reflexively anticonformist. For all its romanticism, it seems like punk and new wave and art rock turned people into disappointments and failures, but Huey seems to have achieved some happiness as a guy who made the same kind of music, with the same arch, but with a sheen that kept anyone from ever digging deep into it or foisting expectations onto him.

I’ve tried listening to Huey Lewis, but I guess nothing else of his will ever hit me as hard as “Once Upon A Time In New York City” from Oliver & Company. Sorry, Mr. Lewis, I was six and there was a sad kitten.

Fun fact-Huey Lewis actually played Haley's dad on One Tree hill.

RedBedroomRecords

I dunno, Huey Lewis never tried to soft-peddle a raging bigot like Howard did with J.D. Vance.

RedBedroomRecords

yeah there's WAY worse songs then that one out there("Dance Monkey" comes to mind).

Do you not know the song Back in Time?

This song and "The Power of Love" are the only two Huey Lewis and the News songs I know, because I am a fan of BTTF. Did you know that's him as the teacher at the audition at the beginning of the movie? Yeah, the one who says McFly's music is "just too darn loud".

Awesome piece. Couldn't agree more about American Psycho. Watched it with some friends grinning every time he held up a CD only to be met with conflicting feelings where my friends would point and go "hey look it's you." And they don't even know I get down with Land of Confusion!

Oh my god. Is Huey Lewis to rock music what Ron Howard is to movies!?

I never understood why Todd vehemently dislikes “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me”… it’s an alright song to me (no pun intended).

There's a part in the book The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle where a character is describing the music that plays in the warehouse where they work, and they say, more or less, "if you like Air Supply or Barry Manilow you might like it there." Subtext: you would have to be completely insane to like it there.

"Have you ever actually listened to this fucking thing?" Yeah, it slaps pretty hard, right? Uh...right?
