Arbor Rainier

haha same here

Sarah Schumm

Yes! It’s #33 on Trending! Worldwide Baltimora Dance Party!

RedBedroomRecords

oh yeah, surprised Todd didn't make a joke about that.

Sarah Schumm

The Promise would be on my wishlist but Tarzan Boy was the only one I would pay that much money for.

Henry S Mayper

Legit, it's so bad. I wanna defend it sometimes, but I think it kinda speaks for itself.

Josh Liller

I've never watched that movie. I'm not a fan of Chris Farley.

Florian Decros

unfortunate initials

Sarah Schumm

You’re welcome! I’m happy it’s making so many people happy.

RedBedroomRecords

it was also in Beverly Hills Ninja.

RedBedroomRecords

I think MIMS "This is Why i'm Hot" came out after that one.

RedBedroomRecords

oooh I heard that song on an episode of King of the Hill, though The Dream Academy actually had more then one top 40 hit in the U.S. as their follow-up single "The Love Parade" managed to get to #36. I'm still crossing my fingers that one of the upcoming requests is "The Promise" by "When in Rome".

RedBedroomRecords

he also did MIMS "This is Why I'm Hot" which was from 2009 or 2008

RedBedroomRecords

Thank you for picking this song, it was actually one of the one-hit wonder hit songs on my wish-list(still holding out hope that one of the other five requests is "Into the Night" by Benny Mardones).

RedBedroomRecords

I mostly know him for doing the Scarface soundtrack.

RedBedroomRecords

how so?

RedBedroomRecords

The third movie was actually the first one I saw cause it was the only one available for rental at my local library, that should've been a red flag right there. Even as a kid I recognized it's badness, AVGN was definitely right about that film.

RedBedroomRecords

I know that song cause it was in one of the GTA games but I didn't know it was considered Itala Disco.

RedBedroomRecords

Yes this episode was on my wish-list! So happy to see it on here. I first heard this song in the third live-action TMNT movie.

Sarah Schumm

I was too old for Ninja Turtles in 93, but I worked at an old one screen movie theater that played it, so I associate it with both.

Kristopher Bluth

I was too young to care much about pop music in 1986 and too old for the Ninja Turtles in 1993, so I mostly associate it with the Listerine commercial.

Semilocon

Glad to see the dog is well!

GEL COLOGNE

Just wanted to share that Dolce Vita by Ryan Paris is one of my favorite songs ever, and I squealed with excitement when it was mentioned

margo

There's a documentary called the Dons of Disco on an Italo Disco controversy that's not a million miles away from some of the rumours discussed in this video, def worth a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xc2GTGLk0Ss

Danimal

Laura Brannigan's cover of Gloria peaked at #2 summer '82. That's probably the peak of the genre's success in the US

Charles Arthur

1. If they get on it, they should get Grant O'Brian from Dropout to play Jimmy. ABSOLUTELY the same vibe. 2. Thank goodness the ad read was a fakeout. BetterHelp BLOWS from all I've heard...

James Gardiner

I believe one of the requests was “Untouched” by The Veronicas, which is from 2007. This is unconfirmed though, so take it with a grain of salt.

Andrew Lenahan

My butt clenched very hard when you started that ad read, Todd…

Sarah Schumm

It’s my personal head cannon that someone at Pixar picked it for the Listerine commercial to make up for the original video, because the song deserved better.

Joe G

Every dental care product in the 90s was deeply concerned with gingivitis. Nowadays I can't remember hearing the word at all.

Henry S Mayper

You gotta give a shout-out to Jack Perry and Jurassic Express, they introduced me to this song, I was born in '96 and missed the boat. My cousins showed me every Turtles movie *except* the third. Also, one of the wrestlers from Jurassic Express, Luchasaurus, is currently pretty sick, so if anyone else is here in Todd's comments trying to push for Jurassic Express, pray for him. Todd, you'd love Luchasaurus, his gimmick is that he's a dinosaur, he's insanely acrobatic for a 6'10'' juggernaut, and in real life he's got a Master's Degree. He was also on Big Brother for one season, and got drummed out of the WWE for blowing the whistle on an abusive trainer.

Dave Ruff

I had no idea what song this was until Todd started playing the piano in the intro, and was like, 'oh, that one...'

Florian Decros

"Key Key Karimba" is an unfortunate title, isn't it

BlackCat1989

Todd, I hate to say it, but the Weissmuller Tarzan Yell in this video is WAY too loud.

Judgesaturn507

I Love College is the most recent one he's done.

Judgesaturn507

Yay, a OHW I don't know. First one since Turn Up The Radio

Pooga

I can't speak to any of the other requests, but mine was not. As for his existing catalog, I *think* Ridin' by Chamillionaire (2005) is the most recent song he's done for One Hit Wonderland. I don't remember if it's in that one, but I remember him saying in one of his videos that he was mostly uncomfortable with labeling even artists from 15 years ago as one-hit wonders since they sometimes have an unexpected second hit years later. Update: After rewatching his Ridin' video and I Love College and Laffy Taffy, it looks like I misremembered and his line is around 10 years without a second hit. It was in the Ridin' video where he mentioned it and he calls out Mike Posner having recently had a comeback.

Tegan Davidson

Same!

Tegan Davidson

I breathed a sigh of relief when Todd was plugging Nebula and not Better Help.

Matthew

No mention of Jack Perry?

Matthew

Wasn't Giorgio Moroder the guy from that Daft Punk song?

Christian Reiswig

For what it’s worth, I still think Todd’s videos from like 2009 and the early 2010’s still hold up well. It’s cool to hear his commentary on those songs while they were recent. And he’s had virtually the same structuring for his videos down since the beginning, it makes for a good back catalog to watch.

Sarah Schumm

I was hoping someone could confirm it, I didn’t know where to look, I even tried the Pixar channel on Disney+

Gabby Wolf

I first found this song from it getting referenced in a webcomic I read when I was like 10. I don’t even remember the name of the comic now, but god bless you whoever wrote that throwaway joke in 2007 for bringing this song into my life!

Derek Ledbetter

This page says that Pixar made a compilation DVD for their employees: https://archive.org/details/pixar-commercials-1989-1996/. That Listerine commercial was on it.

ahmetyildizturan94

God. I love the continuing of Baltimore joke from SR-71 OHW.

Sarah Schumm

I installed the Patreon app and turned on notifications just to request this! I happened to have some time off between jobs and was wanting for the requests to open as if I were trying to score concert tickets. So you’re welcome! I’m happy it’s such a popular one.

Sarah Schumm

89X was my favorite station when I was a teenager!

Colton Moore

Dude, that "Living in the Background" song is a *bop* - hadn't heard it until now, and I've listened to it six or seven times in a row now

Sarah Schumm

Glorious! Worth every penny! As a rich Gen Xer this is how I like to blow my money trying to recapture my youth! I also bought a couple of original seats from the theatre I used to work at where I used to dance to this during the credits of TMNT 3.

Paul Boyer

Before I found out how expensive they were going to be, I was considering paying for one of these. My first choice was (and still is) "Life in a Northern Town" by Dream Academy, but this would've cracked my top 5. Glad I got to see it for free.

Taylor Abrahamse

I recall there being episodes in the past about some late 00s songs. Or maybe those were just reviews? 'Paper Planes', 'Like A G6' ... maybe its time for a Gotye one?

Sarah Schumm

I double checked twice before requesting it that he hadn’t done it already. It’s so perfect.

Sarah Schumm

The day he said he would be taking requests the soccer players in the park were playing it and I took it as a sign I would get my request.

Tiny Bubbles

JFC the ad read nearly gave me a heart attack

Sarah Schumm

I was hoping he’d mention the Pixar connection, but there’s not a lot confirming it.

Citizen Calmar

Yyyyep. This is one of those songs where, intellectually, obviously I knew there had to be an actual artist (or at least, a producer) behind it, but it never once occurred to me to wonder who that was or whether they'd ever done anything else. I enjoy the hell out of this song when it comes on, and then I just move on with my life afterward. Sorry to hear about Jimmy' passing, though, damn.

Sarah Schumm

I can be both!

Kathy Mathers

Wait, Todd, pardon if this isn't the right place to ask but like. Not a request just a question (I'm not crazy enough too spend that much money), are they're any late 2000s / early 2010s request, I'm a zoomer and that's basically my era so that's why I wanna ask.

Jasper Phua

Something I don't think has been mentioned, this and The Time's "Jungle Love" are pointed to as some of the earliest uses of the 'Millennial Whoop'.

Sean C.

The rare entry in this series I have absolutely zero knowledge of.

Herbieguy98

Whoever subbed this is a god damn king. I love this song. And the album it was on was surprisingly great too. (Edit: Queen. I meant Queen. Didn't get to start the video until after work, my bad).

The Other Greg

Also, too, Toddstradamos just solved another mystery plaguing me for literally 20 years - He identified the sample used in Messiah's 1994 techno 'hit' Thunderdome that I always thought was original lyrics for the song. CIMX 89x played the fuck out of that song, and I do love it so. Legit thanks Todd.

Eric

So I have been wondering since Todd has made a few wrestling references in his videos. I am guessing he doesn't still watch. Get better soon Luchasaurus!

The Other Greg

New One Hit Wonderland AND a Jeffry Combs reference? And it's by one of my all time favorite "keeps getting rediscovered" Songs? Awww yeah. Yes - for the record, Listerine got me into it, but I had to learn the name of the band because I was buying music Pre-Napster.

Kristopher Bluth

I think a young MC Hammer saw those pants and thought, "Hmm..."

gaia

Not sure if it's quite fair to say Italo-Disco did "nothing" in America. Certainly nothing compared to Europe, but it had a presence in the clubs for awhile. The only other pop hit I can think of is Laura Branigan's Self-Control (which is an Italo-Disco cover), but you could hear the influence on mainstream hits from the Pet Shop Boys, Madonna, Rick Astley, etc.

The Hand Of The People

saw the Betterhelp punchline coming from a mile away, still loved it

David L. Lebovitz

Part of me was sad that you sped past the YTMND chapter but also I fully understand not wanting people to look up how the internet reacted to something called "Gay Fuel" during the Bush years.

John Seiler

Tarzan Boy also made a pretty great entrance theme for the tag team of Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus, AEW’s Jurassic Express. https://youtu.be/ZKXquGVXhac?si=I2YCiRrLV6dFSH31

Jasper Phua

'Twitter is wild because the dumbest people are like "Mayhaps you have slandered me with that ad hominem" and the smartest people are like "my dog is a chonky boi"'

Josh Liller

I vaguely remember that Listerine commercial and I have some fondness for 80s synth-pop, but I never watched TMNT3 and only know this song exists because of "Jungle Boy" Jack Perry in AEW. Even then, I never saw any of the AEW shows where he used that intro music, so until this video I've never actually heard the song.

Abigail Conte

anti-baltimore rant redeemed by "lamar for MVP"

Shiny Skunk

As soon as I saw this guy dancing I yelled to my partner, "that is a gay little guy."

Gene Younkin

Pixar were busy honing their craft before Toy Story.

Dan

This is one of my favorite 80s songs ever! It's my Africa.

Taylor Abrahamse

Amazing Nebula leadup. I was so worried 😅

Taylor Abrahamse

That Listerene ad looks too good for 1993!

Castleknackers

Oh thank god, that Betterhelp fakeout had me on edge.

Cody Baird

This was a fun one. I thought I didn't know this one but then the hook played and I recognized it immediately. I loved seeing Jimmy dance, he looked like the lost third Proclaimers brother 😆 sad that he passed away so young.

Connor Rankin

I just hope someone requested the Crash Test Dummies honestly lol good episode :)

Gordon Stearns

The error I noticed is that you passed up on a prime opportunity to mention Move Your Dead Bones.

Alina

This is my cue to convince people to run, don't walk, to Project Gutenberg and read the original Tarzan novel. It's so much weirder than you expect from the movies. And it doesn't end like you think it does!

Robert Lee

I was really not prepared for that Woody Boogie reveal

Seeb

Bout to find out how many wrestling marks are on your patreon

Alina

Todd, what do you not love about Greystoke, a move in which hot, young Christopher Lambert jumps around the bed on all fours and makes monkey noises to seduce hot, young Andie MacDowell.

Taylor Abrahamse

The funny thing about a lot of euro pop is that, for how 'sophisticated' Europeans are, their big hit songs, especially their crossover hits, tend to be super dumb guilty pleasures.

Russet Burbank

I hope this episode has an explanation of why this song was on the local pop radio a ton when I started junior high in 1992-93. ...TMNT 3, you say? Okay. Also, this is an all-time classic Youtube preview image.

Bailey Vogt

Loved it! Never heard of this song and you taught me a lot about Italian disco Also your swerve in the sponsor segment was hilarious

Alina

Very comforting to return to what is my quintessential OHW experience: seeing the title, thinking "I don't know this one," and then immediately recognizing it when Todd starts playing.

MarioDaBean

RIP Jimmy you would have hated Jack Perry

Marie Dacy

The fact that I was listening to this JUST this morning and was thinking “man when is Todd gonna do a OHW episode on this” AND SURE ENOUGH

Bryce Harper

HOW WAS "JUNGLE BOY" JACK PERRY NOT BROUGHT UP ONCE

Kyle Olson

The Listerine commercial was in heavy rotation. The early use of full CG presumably made it a big investment. I remember when I saw the commercial getting the feeling that the song, which was something I was aware of, now felt like something very familiar. It might have done more than anything to make the song evergreen. Based on when the commercial aired, it seems likely that lined up with TMNT 3's production. Given that, I would assume that's what inspired them to use it in the dance scene. I don't know for sure about why it eventually charted. The timing seemed to be connected to the movie. I suspect it was pushed to radio stations since the TMNT 3 soundtrack give a record company the incentive to push it to the local stations.

Gregory Fanoe

I'm lowkey psyched to hear Todd's take on Italo disco, one of my all-time favorite genres

Dovis Bellwood

I unironically love this song ❤️

Jon Heiman

Oh boy. Of all the Aqua knockoffs in the late-90s... that was certainly one of them.

Kelleigh O'Hara

Since we're talking about Tarzan songs... https://youtu.be/IlDjEd8gAkI?si=urez0o8kNkLeb5ta

Michael Jones Jr.

Could you please do a Trainwreckords episode on "Return of Dragon" by Sisqo?

candidgamera

Holy hell.

Ashe.

No goddamn way, I wanted this since 2018

Brice Onken

Same here!!

Jon Heiman

Yes! I had been secretly hoping for this one for years!
