I was in Somaliland recently (I promise this story is related to Linkin Park), and my guide was a local Somalilander by the name of Omar. When he was driving me around from town to town through the desert, he would encourage me to put on whatever I wanted over the speaker in the car he built from scratch and spent every night fixing for hours on end after dropping me off at whatever hotel I was staying at that night. Eventually, he gently asked if he could play one of his favorite songs, which turned out to be "Burn It Down" off Linkin Park's 2012 album. I think that one experience gave me more appreciation for Linkin Park than anything else. From the time I was in middle school, I always viewed Linkin Park as overearnest music hypertargeted at suburban white boys (I was also a suburban white boy, but somehow I felt it was targeted at the kids I didn't like in my neighborhood and not at me). I can't view it the same now though, not after singing along to "In The End" while driving through the desert with a man who grew up half a world away from me, not after seeing how a man who has worked hard and lived a much harder life than anyone I grew up around related to the same angst. It was a great reminder of the ways that music can bring us together, even (and especially) in ways we could never expect.

Just wanted to mention my friend had a queer punk band called Twinken Park.
