Hey, get well soon

Ian Danskin

my dad's pretty great too, the above post notwithstanding. hooray for good dads who are still unhelpful!

Dragons In Dungeons

ok so true story last december I was trying to help my dad push his car out of the snow and I fell and fucked up my back super hard could not walk straight for over a month could not stand or sit or lay just absolute unimaginable agony lit. begging my dad to fucking kill me and he's like "you just threw your back out, it happens to me all the time, of course it's gonna hurt for a while, quit being such a fucking pussy" had my first seizure (long story, mostly unrelated) in my life and was hospitalized last month, CAT scan/MR shows that NOPE, I LITERALLY BROKE MY SPINE in that fall, L2 vertebrae specifically, didn't know it was possible to BREAK YOUR SPINE and get shamed into not knowing it or doing anything about it, THANKS DAD (my dad is pretty great really)

I get all my worst body problems from my dad and anytime I have an issue I have to actively resist not sending him a photo of me glaring.

I'm 35 and I'm just waiting (full of dread) for shit to escalate from occasional muscle stiffness and joint pops/crackles to 'the real shit'... O_o To say nothing of the fact that all my bad posture and gaming will lead to me just being a single fused arthritic bone when I'm older. X_X

THIS! I got a cane last year and I'm 35. I have spent years downplaying or not talking about the pain I live with AND when I do talk about it, I get told "I'm too young" to be in so much pain. It took me years to get to where I am now, where I can name my disability and advocate for my access needs around it. Truly, gotta challenge the ableist concept of what disability looks like or who it affects and at what age and how.

Take it from someone who's known back pain for too many years: there are prescription anti-inflammatories (i.e., _not_ muscle relaxers) that are way stronger than ibuprofen. They're not addictive, but you gotta ask your doc for them. And in the meantime, whatever you do, don't stress out about the video being later than you planned. You and Contrapoints are two of the only video essayists whose work demands and rewards repeated views/listens. So don't worry about us: you've already given us plenty to keep busy with.

Take care ❤️

Take all the time you need. We'll still be here. I know I sound like a broken record/skipping cd/vine video (circle which lines up with your generation, folks) but it's not worth busting yourself for us. We know you're human.

I’m 28, and my mom has already just started condemning any part of my person that hurts and recommends some weird remedy that seems wholly unrelated. “My knee hurts and I don’t know why.” “Ugh, that sucks. It’s probably just shitty now. Nothing wrong with it, you’ve just got shitty knees from here on out. Take a decongestant and run some mentholatum on it, see if that does anything.”

I bought into that old age thing for too long. I kept denying my pain and disability because I was too afraid of what people would say. I'm very glad that I started to use a cane last year. I turned 50 in November and felt like I wasted so much time I could have been doing anything else except worry about what other people thought about my pain or other stuff! Also good on you to also remind your dad that he's still your dad and should be interested in how much pain you're in. Also I have been noticing all last year the people treat you so much better when you're using a cane.

As someone who's had 2 surgeries for exactly that shit let me say: I know how you feel. It is no fun. Oh, and I turned 31 last week. I've had my share of age jokes.

Ian Danskin

oh, I am ENTIRELY maxed out. unfortunately I can't take muscle relaxants because they have negative interactions with my antidepressants, but I am taking the max dose of ibuprofin every 4 hours.

BakedCatDad

Hope you feel better! Being in pain sucks!!

Nikki

Oh man. That fucking sucks :/ As someone who's had their fair share of pain-ridden illness episodes, including dozens of colics, ripped intestines and a 4-month period of chronic pain, I just wanna make sure to remind you that pain is not something that's supposed to be endured; if you're still in pain, you should take more pain meds until you're not (unless you're maxed out on all of them, of course). Pain is bad for the body and the brain and can have long-term crippling effects on both - of course, sometimes you don't have any choice, but we often think that we shouldn't go "too far" and are quick to just accept even intense pain just because it's regular, but we definitely shouldn't and doctors who suggest otherwise or don't believe us how in pain we are are the actual problem. 💕 Needless to say, take all your damn time and space and go with the pace you can. Your body has priority!
