Catch-up
I didn't do an update for July. I'm sorry! Being back at work has been nice but occasionally overwhelming. Been a bit scattered.
I've also made two different videos public this month, and forgot to let you know! They're both videos you've seen already, but I usually send out a message when they are shareable. It's been so long since I was releasing stuff it seems I'm forgetting certain steps.
But anyway! Two weeks ago I released the final CO-VID: 25 good things that got me through. And yesterday I officially released Endnote 5: A Case Study in Digital Radicalism. It is very nice to be releasing things again.
What's the Catch?
In more frustrating news, How to Radicalize a Normie has been age-restricted, which means it no longer shows up in searches, and, in some countries, you have to send YouTube a photo of your ID before they'll let you watch it. First they claimed it violated their sex & nudity policy, and, when I appealed, they said, "no, wait, it actually violates our violence policy!"
So they've upheld the restriction and I'm not allowed a second appeal. I'm still trying to figure a way around it - there's some Twitter pressure from fans, and I might know a fan or two who works at YouTube who can change things. But, in the meantime, my most popular and, in my opinion, my most important video is functionally buried. This is especially frustrating because the dozen or so response videos "debunking" it are still online, despite containing all the same footage.
I've been through this enough times before that I think it'll eventually get sorted it. Meantime, you can still share it and see it on my channel page.

As for the future:
My animator and I are working our way through the next Alt-Right Playbook. We've got a more or less finalized draft of the script, a whole bunch of assets, and the first page or so has been animated. I'm not making any release projections - it'll take as long as it takes - but I'm excited about what we've done so far.
Also been making progress on my collab with another YouTuber. We were originally targeting August for release, but, until a few weeks ago, I was juggling three projects and it was frankly too much. So we've slowed down and are also saying "it'll come out when it comes out." But the script is starting to come together and I quite like it.

I cannot possibly express how very much I value the Endnote 5 video. It is just...so immensely helpful to have all of that information in one place, with citations. It also makes me appreciate the absolute fullness of the caucasity and misogyny operating in GG. Your opening statement to the video matches my feelings on the entire thing *perfectly*.

An Untitled Story still holds the #1 spot for me. Despite the unassuming first impression, it ends up being a REALLY captivating experience. Maddy Thorson is probably best known for Celeste and TowerFall these days, but their older work is absolutely worth a look.

Hollow Knight is by far my favourite. I've never been *that* big into metroidvanias on account of my sense of direction being utter garbage, but Hollow Knight drew me in like very few other games have, and it's one of the only games I actually felt compelled to get all of the achievements for and complete 100% (well, 112%) without stopping to play something else in the meantime. One of the most rewarding games I've ever played.

Hollow Knight, all day every day. It's the only game I've ever cared to 100% (or, in this case, 112%), and I still keep going back to it.

Coincidentally enough, earlier today a friend was telling me I really should play Hollow Knight. But until then, at least, my favorite is the oft-overlooked Castlevania: Circle of the Moon.

Yeah it has to be Hollow Knight, but ignoring that, I'll be contentious and say Smash Run from the 3DS Smash Bros game. Also, Knytt and sequels deserve a mention, Iconoclasts is great but not a metroidvania IMO, and I need to go buy forma.8 because I essentially beat the demo twice. I picked up Dandara again and have lost all my salt to the Dreamlands so I guess I can't be salty, but I sure am frustrated.
If I were being cheeky, I'd say my favorite Metroidvania is Outer Wilds. But if I'm being sincere, then I have to admit that it is Metroid Fusion. There's a nostalgia element at play here, as it's one of the first I played, but it's also that the... fusion... of that particular gaming genre with the aesthetics of the Alien school of desolate spacefaring science fiction just sings to me.
It's hard to choose between Hollow Knight and Ori and the Blind Forest. HK has better combat and lore / story, but the movement and visuals are so spectacular in Ori. You have to play both, really.

I don't know about "favorite", but I really like Yoku's Island Express, a metroidvania/pinball mashup that works far better than it has any right to. It's also cute as balls, and fun to manipulate once you get the hang of it. Strong recommend. Some other recommendations would be Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Song of the Deep, and Sundered, all fun in different ways.

Ah, The Swapper! I've always thought of it as a puzzle platformer and never noticed it was also a Metroidvania. I pride myself on solving all the puzzles in Braid without a walkthrough, but I had to look up solutions to the final two puzzles in The Swapper. Good game!

...I realize now that asking "what's your favorite Metroidvania?" might as well be asking "have you played Hollow Knight?" Nothing else comes close.

It's not news, but God it's disturbing how broken the reporting system on YT is and how much power bad faith actors have. Fingers crossed you get it sorted sooner than later. My favorite Metroidvania is also probably my favorite video game (though that's not saying much; I haven't played very many): The Swapper. It's a Metroidvania puzzle platformer with a clever sci-fi hook, gorgeous assets and backgrounds sculpted from clay, and a fascinating narrative that incorporates philosophical questions of identity in a really engaging way (the narrative was written by Tom Jubert, who was also the narrative lead for The Talos Principle, Subnautica, and FTL).
