Elements Child Base and Design Previews
🕑 Added 2022-03-25 14:59:01 +0000 UTCHello! I have something today that expands on the Elements character style.
One thing that the original Time Fantasy set was missing was child characters. Kids are important NPCs to fill out a town or village. Eventually, after patreon requests, I created some -- but I don't want to make the same mistake this time around.
Since my goal is for the style to be enough to create an entire game with, I want to include some child NPCs in the initial release of the Elements character set when it launches to public store pages.
I'm happy to share with you today the base sprite that I came up with, and a preview of the designs of the NPC sprites that I'm going to make for the children.
This preview image shows how it looks. The top row shows the regular Time Elements base and an example character (with and without the shadow). Then the child base that I've come up with.
Of course, then at the bottom, you can see some designs I came up with for some child sprites.
Unlike the main sprite assets for the style, the child sprites will be unique standalone sprites, with just the classic 4-directional walking animations. It's just not realistic to use generator parts for them, because the proportions are so different. So for these guys, the intended use is as NPCs.
So my plan is to create four children, two boys and two girls (you can see them above). Then I'll make some simple recolors of them, to give us a set of eight child NPC sprites. This set of pre-made characters will be included in the final release of the Elements core character pack.
I'll share the final child sprite sheets here when it's finished, too.
The pack will also likely include the base, which I'll also probably release for free (I like to release the bases for free, so people can create their own unique characters in the style).
For now-- I'm sharing this child base with you as a special patreon preview.
Also -- when I look at it now, it looks like it could be used for regular full-sized characters in a game that uses a cuter chibi style, like Pokémon or something LOL. Maybe you could find a use for it that way, too.

I could eventually make animations for them that match the animations of the main elements set. They just wouldn't be compatible with other generator pieces because the proportions are different, so they would be standalone sprite animations like the ones we did for original Time Fantasy.

It just doesn't make sense because they are a different size. Nothing would be compatible at all with the other parts that already exist for adults. It's possible that there could be an entire expansion pack based around child-sized pieces. But that would be very far off, after other major sets are released to establish the style.

Shame about the lack of attack animations. Because I was totally planning on using the base for, like, halflings or dwarves. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
